What is Metaliteracy ~ Metaliteracy MOOC

What is Metaliteracy ~ Metaliteracy MOOC | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This Metaliteracy MOOC explores the metaliteracy model originally developed by Tom Mackey and Trudi Jacobson in Reframing Information Literacy as a Metaliteracy. This open learning experience turns theory into practice by exploring emerging technologies to collectively create and distribute information in an open participatory environment. We will interact with global participants and continuously reflect on our learning in this environment. This MOOC has been developed for course sharing between the University at Albany and Empire State College, at the undergraduate and graduate levels, and to engage with participants globally. It is also available to use in any way you find helpful or supportive in your own teaching, research, and/or learning journey.

Proposing A Metaliteracy Model To Redefine Information Literacy | Distance-Educator.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Metaliteracy is envisioned as a comprehensive model for information literacy to advance critical thinking and reflection in social media, open learning settings, and online communities. At this critical time in higher education, an expansion of the original definition of information literacy is required to include the interactive production and sharing of original and repurposed digital materials. Metaliteracy provides an overarching and unifying framework that builds on the core information literacy competencies while addressing the revolutionary changes in how learners communicate, create, and distribute information in participatory environments.

The Information Literacy User’s Guide: An Open, Online Textbook | OER Commons

Author(s): Trudi Jacobson, Greg Bobish, Deborah Bernnard, Daryl Bullis, Jenna Hecker, Irina Holden, Allison Hosier and Tor Loney

Good researchers have a host of tools at their disposal that make navigating today’s complex information ecosystem much more manageable. Gaining the knowledge, abilities, and self-reflection necessary to be a good researcher helps not only in academic settings, but is invaluable in any career, and throughout one’s life. The Information Literacy User’s Guide will start you on this route to success. The Information Literacy User’s Guide is based on two current models in information literacy: The 2011 version of The Seven Pillars Model, developed by the Society of College, National and University Libraries in the United Kingdom and the conception of information literacy as a metaliteracy, a model developed by one of this book’s authors in conjunction with Thomas Mackey, Dean of the Center for Distance Learning at SUNY Empire State College. These core foundations ensure that the material will be relevant to today’s students.

This site is designed to provide information about the concept of metaliteracy. It also highlights work that is being done in connection with metaliteracy by a group of PIs working on a SUNY IIT (Innovative Information Technology) grant. The grant awarded in 2012 is Developing a SUNY-wide Transliteracy Learning Collaborative to Promote Information and Technology Collaboration. (We decided since naming it that metaliteracy better informs the work that we are doing.)
