What are the key questions that educators should ask when assessing new edtech?

One of the great myths the edtech industry tries to sell us is that it invented personalised learning.

Edtech companies trumpet the promise of using computers to teach, with students able to move at their own pace through the material in an individualised way, seeing exactly the content that they need to learn at precisely the right level for them, at just the moment they need to see it.

The problem is, it’s not new – and it’s not really personalised.

How Facebook Plans to Disrupt Education | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back in September, Facebook made a deal with Summit Public Schools. Don't worry if you didn't hear about it when it happened – it was a quiet event, without a lot of fanfare. With that being said, the implications of this partnership might change everything we know about public education.

10 characteristics of authentic learning | Learning with 'e's

Too often in school classrooms around the world the delivery of content is abstract, disconnected and decontextualised. Students are then regularly tested on their recall of what they have 'learnt' and graded as successes or failures. But exactly what is their success or failure? And what does this process of assessment teach students about the school system? Part of the problem is that content is delivered, with little opportunity for students to make personal sense of that content. Another problem is that students are then expected to replicate that 'knowledge' in a form that is recognisable as the original. Students are therefore learning exactly what is already known, rather than exploring new knowledge and gaining fresh insight on the world.
