How to Prevent Spammers From Infiltrating Your Google Calendar

How to Prevent Spammers From Infiltrating Your Google Calendar | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

My boyfriend and I have a shared Google calendar so we can keep track of each other’s various events and commitments, as well as things like concerts and parties we plan to attend together. It’s a great system for us, but this week we ended up with something a little odd on that calendar: “You Have Won iPhone X s from AppleStore.”

The event was added from my boyfriend’s Gmail account; however, he says he never saw an email for the “event” in the first place. It’s also on our calendar five different times.

How to use Facebook while giving it the minimum amount of personal data

How to use Facebook while giving it the minimum amount of personal data | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Facebook has found itself embroiled in yet another colossal controversy related to how its sprawling, multibillion-person social network has been abused by bad actors. This time, the culprit is Cambridge Analytica, a data analytics firm used by President Donald Trump’s campaign during the 2016 US election to target election ads on Facebook. It turns out, Cambridge Analytica misused the user data of as many as 50 million Facebook users via its affiliated behavior research firm Strategic Communication Laboratories, which violated Facebook’s terms of service by acquiring said data from a third-party app and reportedly lying about when that data was deleted and how it was used.

As broadband privacy rules are rolled back, what can libraries do to respond?  By Anne Ford | April 21, 2017

On April 3 President Trump signed a measure repealing Obama-era broadband privacy rules. Those rules, which had not yet gone into effect, would have required internet service providers (ISPs) to obtain customers’ permission before selling their information to third parties—information that includes browsing history, location data, and other highly sensitive content.

If you want privacy you need to run Linux | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
I recently bashed Windows for being too darn snoopy, but you know what? It’s not just Windows. Ever since Yosemite came out, Apple’s macOS has been just as untrustworthy. As for Chrome OS, Android and iOS, come on! They’re all built around cloud services; by design, they share everything you do with third-party services. What’s the answer? Desktop Linux.

Why digital literacy should include privacy education | librarian.net » Blog Archive | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A friend pointed me to an article about educating novice users about technology: Joining the Surveillance Society? New Internet Users in an Age of Tracking (full article PDF). The article calls them “marginal users” which is a term I hadn’t heard before but it seems apt. While I don’t agree with every aspect of the article, the thesis is strong and worth exploring. Only some of the classes mentioned are library classes.
