New ‘world-first’ Jisc project will allow students to compare their performance against their classmates’

Every day, universities collect huge amounts of information about their students, ranging from grades and attendance, to library loans and virtual learning environment log-ins. Until now, however, most UK universities have not done much to bring those data together in a coherent way. It has been US and Australian institutions that have led the development of learning analytics: the use of such information to identify individuals who may be struggling and understand which teaching methods work best.

Are Freshman Ready for College Research?

Are Freshman Ready for College Research? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
A recent report from Project Information Literacy identifies the challenges that college freshmen face as they tackle their first major research projects.

We identified a disparity between the Google-centric search skills that many first-term freshmen brought with them from high school and the competencies they needed to meet the far higher research expectations in college. Moreover, we found freshmen we studied had gaping holes in their understanding of how libraries--and the vast array of digital resources academic libraries provided--could best meet their needs, especially when it came to sifting out the trusted information they wanted."

That's the conclusion from the most recent report from Project Information Literacy, [ http://projectinfolit.org/pdfs/PIL_2013_FreshmenStudy_FullReport.pdf ] headed by Alison Head of the Berkman Center and the University of Washington.

Alison Mackenzie explains how a new project is looking at the role university libraries play in developing digital literacy

The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) is working on a project to review the roles academic libraries are playing in developing the digital literacies within their own institutions, and across the information profession. Academic librarians have a long tradition of championing the effective use of information. The SCONUL project is designed to reveal how libraries and librarians are shaping their services to maximise the opportunities and benefits of working in a digital environment.

Integrating library literacy through distance learning module design

Dr Clare Brooks (Dept of Curriculum Pedagogy and Assessment, Institute of Education).  Research team: Antony Daws and Barbara Sakarya Project goals: The IOE library team and MA in Education program...

The aim of this extended project is to develop effective strategies to embed library literacy into the module to encourage international students on a distance learning programme to develop effective library usage.  The embedding of library literacy into the module design is a potential solution to the problem of inadequate library literacy in distance learning students. The research seeks to fully evaluate the impact of this integration on both the students’ learning, and their successful completion of the module. The project is intended to improve student access, experience and achievement through their use of elearning technology. The results of this evaluation will be widely disseminated through University of London International Programmes, the CDE network and to colleagues at the Institute of Education.

Elizabeth E Charles's insight:

Project in 2013 will embed information literacy into MA degree for international students on distance learning programme

As you probably know, Google Drive is far more than a place to store files online. It also includes a suite of versatile creation tools, many of which perform the same functions as the ones we use in other spaces. These include Google Docs, a word processing program that behaves similarly to Microsoft Word, Google Slides, a presentation program similar to PowerPoint, and Google Forms, a survey-creation tool similar to Survey Monkey.

Project Information Literacy  [http://projectinfolit.org/ ] just published a summary of its research into US graduates' information behaviour. 63 graduates from 10 US universities were interviewed about what kinds of information need they had now they had left university and how they met their needs. This is "Phase One of a two-year, large-scale study of college graduates and lifelong learning": the second phase will consist of a questionnaire sent to 75,000 recent graduates.
The results identify the graduates as using a wide variety of sources and strategies, particularly using people sources (including using networks that they can tap into) and various online sources such as blogs.
The report is at http://projectinfolit.org/images/pdfs/pil_lll_phase1.pdf
