Does higher education have a retention problem? | Wonkhe | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
When asking if UK higher education has a ‘retention problem’, the obvious place to start is the known data on lower retention rates for certain groups of students, particularly mature, black and minority ethnic and students from poorer socio-economic backgrounds.

We’ll get to that later on, but it strikes me that there’s new retention problem on the horizon. Will all this worsen as a result of dropout rates being a core metric in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF)?

Improving Working Memory: How the Science of Retention Can Enhance All Aspects of Learning - InformED

Improving Working Memory: How the Science of Retention Can Enhance All Aspects of Learning - InformED | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Do you really know something if you can’t remember it? I had a conversation with a fellow educator on this subject one semester, and we both came to the conclusion that knowledge relies almost exclusively on a student’s ability to remember what she has learned. Proof of knowledge comes from demonstration of knowledge; if you can’t recall a fact, then for all intents and purposes you never learned it. But where does that leave intelligence?

Linda Ann Fairclough's curator insight, February 18, 2014 9:33 AM

Interesting take on that.I think then that MOST OF US have only learned what was necessary, interesting or easy.

In some cases People learn without even trying to.

Online learning: It's different

Researchers have found that, by interspersing online lectures with short tests, student mind wandering decreased by 50 percent, note-taking tripled and overall retention of the material improved.

"At the very least, what this says is that it's not enough to break up lectures into smaller segments, or to fill that break with some activity," he said. "What we really need to do is instill in students the expectation that they will need to express what they've learned at some later point. I think it's going to be a very sobering thought for a lot of people to think that students aren't paying attention almost half the time, but this is one way we can help them get more out of these online lectures."

5 Ways to Increase Retention In E-Learning Courses

5 Ways to Increase Retention In E-Learning Courses | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Retention of knowledge is as crucial as transfer of it – something that instructional designers often forget easily. The thing is – IDs may be too burdened with the task of organizing content that they often forget how to write it in a way that is learner-friendly. E-learning actually wins over traditional classroom training in several ways when it comes to making learning stick because of its versatile capabilities. Audios, videos, graphics and multimedia add a whole new dimension to the learning experience."

White paper: Information Research Fluency – Strengthening Student Success & Retention | Entrepreneurial Library Program

nformation has become increasingly complex, as have the mechanisms for accessing and manipulating it. Online growth has been dramatic and rapid, with “90% of all the data in the world… generated in the last two years” (SINTEF, 2013). The Association of College & Research Libraries (ACRL) suggests that an escalating and complex information environment causes “diverse, abundant information choice” in academic studies, the work place, and in personal lives. Compelling evidence illustrates the positive and tangible impact of information literacy and research skills:

Assessment data links a higher GPA to an information literacy course for undergraduates, provided and taught by Entrepreneurial Library Program (ELP) librarians (Norton, 2013).According to a recent case study, 87% of students at Columbia University reported that the strength of their papers increased significantly as a result of using information literacy resources (CredoRef, 2012).First-year students who use the library during their first semester have higher grade point averages and student retention, according to a recent study from the University of Minnesota (Soria, 2013, p.162).
