Five Screencasting Tools Compared and Ranked - Fall 2020 | Free Technology for Teachers

Five Screencasting Tools Compared and Ranked - Fall 2020 | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The launch of Vimeo Record earlier this week made me think that perhaps it was time to write a comparison of popular screencasting / screen recording tools. For this comparison I selected the five options that pop into my head whenever I'm asked about screencasting (which has been almost daily since March). With the exception of Flipgrid all of the tools in this comparison have free and paid options. This comparison only addresses the features that are available to educators for free. If you'd like to see the comparisons in a chart format, I have embedded a chart at the end of this post (if you're reading this in email or RSS you'll need to click through to the website to see the chart).

7 Of The Best Screencasting Software Tools For Classrooms | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Sometimes it’s just quicker and easier to show someone an idea or concept rather than try to say it to them. Other situations demand that you present an idea in multiple formats.

I know when I was in school (back in ancient, rotary-phone days), it would have been really helpful if my teacher could have sent me home with a recording of exactly how she tackled the example calculus problem.

Another Good Screen Capture Tool for Teachers and Students

Quick Capture is a great Chrome extension you can use to take screenshots of your current page. We have been experimenting with it for awhile now and we found it way better than the other tools we have been using (Lightshot and Monosnap). One particular feature we like the most about this app is full-page screen capture. With a single click, Quick Capture generates a screenshot of the whole page. It also offers a wide variety of tools to annotate and edit your screenshots. You can add text, shapes, arrows, edit using a pencil or brush, crop specific parts, add emojis and many more.

A Great Update to Screencastify | Free Technology for Teachers

A Great Update to Screencastify | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Screencastify is a tremendously popular screencast recording tool. A large part of its popularity comes from being easy to use on Chromebooks. In fact, last fall I helped eighth grade students use Screencastify in conjunction with Brush Ninja on their Chromebooks to make simple animated videos. As great as it was Screencastify wasn't without limitations.

How To Easily Create ELearning Videos from Microsoft PowerPoint

How To Easily Create ELearning Videos from Microsoft PowerPoint | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"there are many ways you can integrate PowerPoint into any elearning program. It can be a simple PDF that someone interacts with, or you could use a program like Articulate Presenter to transform that presentation into an interactive, online asset. But what if you just need something “in between”? You don’t have the resources to invest in a program like Articulate, but you want more from your presentation than a rather static PDF.

Well, one possible option is to record yourself giving the presentation. Using a free tool like Screencast-o-Matic allows you to record your screen and then instantly save the video locally or upload to a platform like YouTube."

Shaona Williams's curator insight, December 8, 2015 1:27 AM

First the question comes, why do we need videos in an eLearning course? A video is shot once and can be used in a million other ways. A single video can be translated into other languages; the great thing about videos is that it has a cross-culture appeal and can have one or varied audiences at the same time.
