Future Shock: Orson Welles Narrates a 1972 Film About the Perils of Technological Change

Future Shock: Orson Welles Narrates a 1972 Film About the Perils of Technological Change | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The beginning of the 1972 documentary Future Shock, directed by Alex Grasshof, shows Orson Welles, bearded and chomping on a cigar, standing on an airport people mover. He turns to the camera and delivers a monologue in his trademark silken baritone. “In the course of my work, which has taken me to just about every corner of the globe, I see many aspects of a phenomenon which I’m just beginning to understand. Our modern technologies have changed the degree of sophistication beyond our wildest dreams. But this technology has exacted a pretty heavy price.

What are the Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make When Integrating Technology into the Classroom? | Tech Learning

What are the Biggest Mistakes Teachers Make When Integrating Technology into the Classroom? | Tech Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The word “mistake” is a harsh word. It implies flaws, pointing fingers, errors in judgement, something wrong and possibly even a dead end. I would rather think or connect the word “mistake” to first steps, stepping stones, experimentation and exploration. With that being said, those “first steps” or that exploration cannot become a routine cemented in stone how technology is being used in the classroom.

NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Higher Education Edition | The New Media Consortium | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The NMC Horizon Report > 2014 Higher Education Edition is a collaborative effort between the NMC and the EDUCAUSE Learning Initiative (ELI), an EDUCAUSE Program. This eleventh edition describes annual findings from the NMC Horizon Project, an ongoing research project designed to identify and describe emerging technologies likely to have an impact on learning, teaching, and creative inquiry in education. Six key trends, six significant challenges, and six emerging technologies are identified across three adoption horizons over the next one to five years, giving campus leaders and practitioners a valuable guide for strategic technology planning. The format of the report is new this year, providing these leaders with more in-depth insight into how the trends and challenges are accelerating and impeding the adoption of educational technology, along with their implications for policy, leadership and practice. View the work that produced the report at www.horizon.wiki.nmc.org.

How to make technology a successful partner in teaching | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
No matter how clever its functionality, a smart device is a tool like any other, and has to be applied and used skilfully to do the job well.
Educate Massachusetts's curator insight, August 22, 2014 2:55 PM

Yes, technology is a tool to create and think.  Tools can be created to help and hurt.  Educators are in the business of teaching students how to create and find purpose with positive intentions.

The future of knowledge navigation | Learning with 'e's

Will we ever reach the point in our human development where our relationship with our technologies becomes so natural that they become a part of us? Will we ever be able to claim that they are a problem free extension of our physical capabilities - seamlessly connected to our minds? Many would argue that we have already achieved this. Perhaps though, this would have been an easier question to answer in the last century than it is today. The answer then would have been 'yes - we have already achieved it'.

The Open Flip – a digital economic model for education | Weller | Journal of Learning for Development - JL4D | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
The advent of the internet and digital technologies has given rise to a number of new economic models. These have often been applied to education, but either through faults in the initial models or differences in the characteristics of the education sector, they have not proven to be widely applicable. The use of digital, network technologies combined with open licences is one area that has seen particular success in educational application. This field offers an economic model that has particular application to education, through the reallocation of finances to the production of openly licensed resources instead of the purchase of copyrighted ones. This has potential significant impact across a range of educational practices and beyond.
