As Project DELILA prepares to come to a close, Jane Secker writes about how the project has aided the development of new and innovative teaching methods and has embedded digital and information literacy…

Bringing together librarians, educational developers and learning technologists from a range of institutions, Project DELILA has proven the potential and value that digital and informational literacy can have for higher education teaching. The Developing Educators Learning and Information Literacies for Accreditation Project (DELILA) is part of a series of projects to release a set of open educational resources (OER) and has focussed on releasing materials relating to digital and information literacy that are suitable for use in teacher accreditation programmes in higher education.

Teaching Google Natives To Value Information

The usual term is a digital native–students born into our digital, connected, and uber-social world who have always had Wikipedia to ask questions, and Google to bail them out.

There is nuance to this phenomenon that can distract a bit from the big picture. As with so many complex issues, it is tempting to over-generalize things—claims that 21st century students need to be taught with 21st century tools, or raging against the machine and forcing students to use books, dammit.

Working together: evolving value for academic libraries (report_web.pdf) | C. Creaser & V. Spezi

Findings from three geographic areas, the United States, United Kingdom and Scandinavia, indicated that there is no systematic evidence of the value of academic libraries for teaching and research staff. Despite this, librarians noted that they receive positive feedback about the support the library provides, but there is a perception that academic staff do not really know how to use all that the library can offer.

Outlined in the report are three key issues identified by librarians as being central to working together with faculty. These are: value measurement and perception; working together with researchers and teachers; and raising awareness about library products and services. The report sets out examples of best practice and makes a series of recommendations for libraries and university management to improve the perceived value of academic libraries with teaching and research staff.

What is the educational value of class blogs, wikis etc | UKEdChat.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Session Title:
What is the eductaional value of class bogs, wikis etc

Session Summary:

"Poor blog = comments in lesson.

Good blog = comments that night.

Great blog = children continuing the discussion weeks later."

Although expecting a quieter #ukedchat discussion than usual, owing to the numbers of ‘regulars’ attending BETT, I was pleasantly surprised. It appears there’s a whole host of enthusiastic teachers blogging out there who were more than happy to share what their experiences have taught them.
