In our digital age, social interactions are evolving as people increasingly turn to social media and other virtual spaces to connect. Researchers question if social media hurts or harms our ability to interact with one another, and so far the results are mixed.
It is certain, however, that the internet has created new opportunities for connections and learning that otherwise wouldn’t have existed. This is especially true for professional development, where communities of practice grow networks of educators who come together to learn with, and from, their peers.

I’ve been using the institutional partnership Coventry University has with Linkedin/Lynda.com and have been taking a few short, video-heavy courses to further my understanding in a few area. In light of this I took the opportunity to attend a ‘making the most of Lynda.com‘ course too, presided over by a LinkedIn representative and someone from the DMLL (Disruptive Media Learning Lab) here at Coventry.

For the broader culture, Twitter is usually perceived as a vast wasteland of gossip, rumor, and incivility. But teachers have transformed their corner of Twitter into something else entirely. Increasing numbers of teachers have been using Twitter chats for professional development. Most chats are specific to a certain subject, but some are regional, and others focus on specific student populations.

By now the term professional learning network (PLN) is used very often, but much of the time it refers to the virtual type, meaning our online colleagues and networks. Being a media specialist can be a lonely profession and it’s not uncommon to feel like we’re siloed. As I have moved from being a classroom teacher into teacher leader positions, I’ve noticed it can get lonely and I find myself looking for a face-to-face tribe. Although I find this at conferences, they are infrequent and expensive.

One of the Enabling Competencies identified by the Special Libraries Association is lifelong learning. In busy jobs, taking time to stop and learn something new is not always the easiest thing to do. As I’ve worked to balance professional development with immediate needs, I started to incorporate the practice of being a reflective practitioner.

When I moved to the USA from the southern hemisphere 20 years, I had to learn to drive on the other side of the street. This required me to “unlearn” what I knew and “relearn” how to drive. There was no choice or reason to delay. If I did not adapt, my safety and the safety of those around me would be at risk! Similarly, workplace employees do not have the luxury of slowly adapting to change. The pace is fast, constant and often overwhelming.

Women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers can often feel isolated at work if they don't have a lot of other female colleagues. Fortunately, the internet has more ways for women in tech to connect than ever before. Here are just 40 examples.

For many professors, teaching is the most time-consuming — and rewarding — part of their job. It’s also one that few instructors have had much formal training in, leaving many to learn through trial and error.

Growth is essential to becoming an excellent leader in education. This growth is indispensable when it comes to major areas, like technology, especially because the information is always changing. You should be working hard to grow continuously into a more tech-savvy leader for the school. Unfortunately, many people aren’t sure where to start when it comes to becoming more educated on technology. They wind up falling behind because they didn’t prioritize learning all they could about the technology in their buildings.
