The UNESCO Media and Information Literacy Alliance was born in 2013, with the objective of fostering media and information literate societies through international cooperation and partnerships. Seven years after its establishment, we are witnessing an increasing relevance of its mandate, especially during the COVID-19 disinfodemic when the necessity of MIL has become more evident than ever. It is an imperative to broaden and deepen the reach and impact of the actions of the UNESCO MIL Alliance.

Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization

Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers | United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
This Media and Information Literacy Curriculum for Teachers is an important resource for Member States in their continuing work towards achieving the objectives of the Grünwald Declaration (1982), the Alexandria Declaration (2005) and the UNESCO Paris Agenda (2007) – all related to MIL.

It is pioneering for two reasons. First, it is forward looking, drawing on present trends toward the convergence of radio, television, Internet, newspapers, books, digital archives and libraries into one platform – thereby, for the first time, presenting MIL in a holistic manner. Second, it is specifically designed with teachers in mind and for integration into the formal teacher education system, thus launching a catalytic process which should reach and build capacities of millions of young people.

UNESCO General Conference endorses Media and Information Literacy resolution: an international step forward! | Information Literacy Weblog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The latest meeting of the UNESCO General Conference voted in favour of the draft resolution on Media and Information Literacy that my colleagues on the IFLA Information Literacy Section Committee had been working on persistently through its various stages and drafts, with UNESCO staff. UNESCO is the social/educational arm of the United Nations. Member states are now being encouraged to endorse this at a national level (so, the lobbying needs to continue!)

Organisations from over eighty countries have agreed to join forces and stand together for change as a Global Alliance for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (GAPMIL). GAPMIL is a groundbreaking effort to promote international cooperation to ensure that all citizens have access to media and information competencies. This pioneering initiative was launched during the Global Forum for Partnerships on Media and Information Literacy (MIL) which took place from 26 to 28 June 2013 in Abuja, Nigeria. The forum was held under the theme “Promoting Media and Information Literacy as a Means to Cultural Diversity”. - See more at: http://www.unesco.org/new/en/media-services/single-view/news/unesco_and_partners_launched_global_alliance_for_partnerships_on_media_and_information_literacy/#sthash.2F4NRFyZ.dpuf ;
