Broadening access to digital education: is there another way?

Broadening access to digital education: is there another way? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A post by Stuart Allan, Director of Online Learning, Edinburgh Business School (Heriot-Watt University), @OpenPlanStuart

Reports of ‘the death of the VLE’ have been circulating for long enough for it to become a kitsch subject in ALT circles. But the institutional VLE – whether as a monolithic system or a central column into which other technologies are integrated – remains a ubiquitous presence in most universities.

What students really think about using a VLE

What students really think about using a VLE | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Claudia Moulin is a typical first-year English Literature student. Her institution has a virtual learning environment (VLE) that she uses daily to access course information and course materials. She finds it difficult to navigate, clunky and dated. She is also frustrated by the differences in how her lecturers use it - some use it a lot, others not at all.

During Fresher’s Week, her institution offered VLE training but Claudia did not attend. She assumed that because she can easily learn how to use other websites, platforms, and apps, she wouldn’t have any trouble using the VLE.

A month after classes begin, Claudia signs into the VLE to upload an assignment. It’s 11:52 and her assignment is due at 12:00. Unable to easily find the submission link, Claudia misses the deadline and has a 10% grade penalty.

Want To Create Interactive Moodle Content?

Want To Create Interactive Moodle Content? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Recently there was, what could have been, a fairly benign thread posted on the Moodle forums about how to create more interactive lessons. JP, the thread originator, was simply looking for a way to bring a little more life to the Moodle experience.

As can be expected from the Moodle community, there were others who immediately dove in and offered help and ideas – specifically by looking at all of the features available in the lesson module. However, JP was looking for something even beyond this.

What’s at the top of the learning and teaching agenda in the UK? | Jisc Inform / Issue 38, Winter 2013 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Students are more satisfied than ever according to the National Student Survey results, which revealed that 85% were happy with the teaching on their courses. And on the other side of the desk, institutions are working hard to raise standards and meet student expectations. Last year, Jisc and our partners began to take a more holistic approach to supporting learning and teaching in universities with bespoke consultation and workshops, as well as a leadership development course for leading in technology-enhanced change. The early results are encouraging: the University of Gloucestershire said their involvement in the project “will produce a long-term legacy in changed culture and behaviour.”
