How to Teach Copyright and Fair Use to Students

How to Teach Copyright and Fair Use to Students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

What does it look like to prepare students to navigate the digital world? This is a question I often tackle in both in my own moments of brainstorming and searching for new resources to share, as well as in conversations with fellow educators.

Finding the right resources for teaching students the basics of copyright— including its limitations such as fair use—is essential. We want to make sure students are prepared to work and create in digital and traditional spaces, too. Both the ISTE Standards and the American Association of School Librarians Standards for the 21st Century Learner address the issues of preparing students to navigate and create in a digital world. Although we know this is important, tackling the idea of copyright and fair use can sure feel intimidating.

That’s why I’m so excited to share the Copyright & Creativity for Ethical Digital Citizens curricula for elementary, middle, and high school students

One of the first things you definitely need to talk to your students about particularly during the  first month of this new school year is the importance of respecting the copyrights of digital content they find on the net or anywhere else. Students need to understand how to correctly attribute credits to copyright holders when they include their works in classroom projects. To do this, they need to comprehend the notion of creative Commons.

Copyright and digital literacy: rules, risk and creativity - Kent Academic Repository

Copyright is now an inescapable aspect of learning and research when using digital technologies, and therefore awareness of it is a fundamental part of digital literacy. Rather than being a separate concept that can be considered in isolation, copyright implications arise whenever anyone creates, interacts with or shares content with others. It is therefore woven through all the key aspects of digital literacies and capabilities, with particular relevance for the ethics of sharing. This chapter from the book Digital Literacy Unpacked (Reedy & Parker, Facet 2018) identifies the relationships between copyright and digital literacy, discussing ideas of rules and risk in institutional and non-institutional contexts. In additional it summarises the author's approach to copyright education using games and other creative approaches.

There is a major disconnect between student and faculty digital literacy perceptions, and faculty must provide better access to, and knowledge about, digital resources to improve learning outcomes. At least, that's what new findings suggest.

Resources | Teaching Copyright

There's a lot of misinformation out there about legal rights and responsibilities in the digital era.

This is especially disconcerting when it comes to information being shared with youth. Kids and teens are bombarded with messages from a myriad of sources that using new technology is high-risk behavior. Downloading music is compared to stealing a bicycle — even though many downloads are lawful. Making videos using short clips from other sources is treated as probably illegal — even though many such videos are also lawful.

This misinformation is harmful, because it discourages kids and teens from following their natural inclination to be innovative and inquisitive. The innovators, artists and voters of tomorrow need to know that copyright law restricts many activities but also permits many others. And they need to know the positive steps they can take to protect themselves in the digital sphere. In short, youth don't need more intimidation — what they need is solid, accurate information.
