Everything you think you know about universities and technology is wrong | Wonkhe | Comment | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The technological imperative is writ large across university campuses – helping to create spaces and places for our students to flourish, as we flip, blend and merge our pedagogies to engage the generation “Z “ students – the first ones to arrive in HE with internet access from an early age.

The big data affordances of learner analytics with algorithms to monitor, log, and prompt us to intervene has the potential to automate our progression worries and responses. The drivers for change are evident. The current polarisation of the UK “politick” is reflected in policy for higher education in the UK. The needs of employers are paramount, and education for “public good” has been swept away in pressures to have digital savvy and knowledgeable graduates.

The word ‘precision’ has become a synonym for the application of data to the analysis and treatment of a wide range of phenomena. ‘Precision medicine’ describes the use of detailed patient information to individualize treatment and prevention based on genes, environment and lifestyle, while ‘precision agriculture’ has become an entire field of R&D focused on ‘engineering technology, sensor systems, computational techniques, positioning systems and control systems for site-specific application’ in the farming sector.

6 ways teaching is changing for a digital world

6 ways teaching is changing for a digital world | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Learning to change your teaching practice in today’s digital-first world is a bit like learning a foreign language, to hear ed-tech vet Ann McMullan tell it. “You don’t speak it fluently on the first day. But you pick up one word, two words, three words, and the more you engage and the more you use it, the more  natural it begins to feel.”

Augmented Reality and Web 3.0

Augmented Reality and Web 3.0 | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Augmented reality could open up huge potential for education outside of the classroom and enable students to learn and interact with whatever is in their immediate physical environment at any particular time. It could also transform publishing and the way we interact with books and images by enabling us to transform them into interactive multimedia.

Ed-Tech's Inequalities

Ed-Tech's Inequalities | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

This talk was delivered virtually today at Western Oregon University. The slide deck is available here.

“Education is the civil rights issue of our time,” you’ll often hear politicians and education reform types say.

[snip]

What are the implications for equity here if, for example, we uncritically pursue trends like the “flipped classroom” – that is, asking students to watch video lectures at home? What assumptions are we making about “home”? Can MOOCs really solve the opportunity gap if those without a college or high school degree are far less likely to have adequate let alone affordable Internet access?

Whose Responsibility Is It to Facilitate Digital Equity?

Whose Responsibility Is It to Facilitate Digital Equity? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Technology is becoming a significant component of classroom curriculum and education in general. Computers, tablets, and mobile apps all promote learning on a deeper level for students. While this edtech certainly can help to promote better grades and deeper understanding, schools are now facing issues with digital equity. Students from high-income families have far more access to the technology needed to succeed than those from low-income families. The major disparity is both shocking and widespread."

We must strive for digital equity, not just in the USA but around the world.  Important to consider is that equity for persons with differing needs and/or disabilities must be included in this conversation, in order to someday achieve true digital equity

Could Edtech renew our concept of schools? - Tutorhub Blog

Could Edtech renew our concept of schools? - Tutorhub Blog | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There was a thought provoking article about educational technology in a recent edition of The Economist called ‘Together, technology and teachers can revamp schools’.

The article suggested that up until recently the relationship between technology and education has been tenuous. And that technological advancements, programmes and innovations, which seemed at first to be an exciting leap forward, often became a disappointment in practice. This has mainly been because of professionals’ reservation about using it and lack of necessary skills, as well as scepticism about its benefits.
