5 Ways Technology Is Making Students Anxious

5 Ways Technology Is Making Students Anxious | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Psychological well-being as measured by self-esteem, life satisfaction, and happiness suddenly decreased amongst students after 2012. This decrease in psychological well-being and increase in anxiety levels are linked to the advent of smartphone technology and screen time.

A new study that involved more than a million American high school students, found that adolescents who spent more time on screens (e.g., social media, the Internet, texting, gaming) and less time on non-screen activities, experienced lower psychological well-being. Adolescents who spend little time on electronic communication were the happiest.

How can digital capability promote teaching excellence?

Date 10/10/2016

New research commissioned by QAA and carried out by Sheffield Hallam University explores ways of using technology in teaching that are best for improving the student experience, and how institutions can put the findings into practice.

Technology does not always transform learning, say the researchers.

The report finds that:
technology may have the capability to transform teaching but is not always used to its full potential

technology can aid teaching, but is never a substitute for good teaching practice (such as student-centred learning)

we can and should measure student satisfaction with technology-assisted teaching, but only as one element of effective teaching

it is important to raise the digital skills of all staff, rather than just a few specialists.

Professor Chris Husbands, Vice Chancellor of Sheffield Hallam University and Chair of the Teaching Excellence Framework, said: 'One of the most pressing of questions for university academics is to think in challenging and applied ways about the relationship between digital capabilities and teaching excellence. 'What makes that so interesting a question is the way it poses an enduring question: What does teaching excellence look like, in different contexts? And how does digital capability develop and what does it look like? 'It is important to explore and to understand the ways in which the opportunities afforded by changing technologies can support teaching of the highest quality.'

How Google Impacts The Way Students Think.

by Terry Heick

It’s always revealing to watch learners research. When trying to understand complex questions often as part of multi-step projects, they often simply “Google it.”

Why do people migrate? Google it.

Where does inspiration come from? Google it.

How do different cultures view humanity differently? Google it.

Digital Engagement – How Technology Enhances the Student Experience

Digital Engagement – How Technology Enhances the Student Experience | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
It’s amazing what we can do with a series of ones and zeroes. Modern technologies consisting of databases connected to interfaces that deliver functionalities that improve our day to day lives. The creative and imaginative ways in which we make meaning, offer services, engage, and even make predictions for future success are all predicated on a variety of technology-based solutions. In higher education, our use of technology has always run in step with the world around us. From the days of old when punch cards held reams of research to the present day when information is stored in data-rich, mobile accessible clouds, the student experience is directly connected to an institution’s technology.

Every month or so, EdSurge hosts a summit to bring educators and edtech companies together (there might be one coming up near you). Sometimes, we're lucky enough to have students join us, and when we do, our student panel on edtech use is the highlight of the event. Educators, administrators and ent
