What is your tolerance for failure in education?

Jess Mitchell, senior manager of research and design at the Inclusive Design Research Centre, posed the question on Wednesday to a group of around 850 educators, librarians and other open-access enthusiasts at the OpenEd conference in Niagara Falls, N.Y.

Even as movements like open access gain momentum and increase access to learning materials for more students, Mitchell said, “the so-called playing field is not equal.” Determining where educators draw the line for failure, whether that’s with students of color, low-income students, immigrant students or some other group, determines educational outcomes and equity opportunities for the future.

Professors Share: The Moment That Changed the Way I Teach

Professors Share: The Moment That Changed the Way I Teach | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
For many professors, teaching is the most time-consuming — and rewarding — part of their job. It’s also one that few instructors have had much formal training in, leaving many to learn through trial and error.

One good shortcut, then, is learning from the experiences of others.

The Chronicle asked a few professors known for their teaching to tell us about an experience that changed what they do in the classroom. Here’s what they said:

Whiteness characterises higher education institutions – so why are we surprised by racism?

Whiteness characterises higher education institutions – so why are we surprised by racism? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Rufaro Chisango, a black student at Nottingham Trent University, tweeted a video of students chanting “we hate the blacks” outside of her dorm. This shockingly racist abuse has quite rightly drawn widespread condemnation.

Whenever someone does something explicitly racist, it’s often framed as an isolated incident. This doesn’t just misrepresent the experiences of black and minority ethnic (or BAME) students, who face racism in many forms on a daily basis – it obscures the structural and institutional nature of racism.

These instances far too frequent demonstrate blatantly why the oppressed should continue to fight.  I am not surprised!

From Good Intentions to Real Outcomes - Connected Learning Alliance | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

The growth of online communication, media, and gaming is driving dramatic changes in how we learn. Responding to these shifts, new forms of technology-enhanced learning and instruction, such as personalized learning, open online courses, educational games and apps, and tools for learning analytics, are garnering significant public attention and private investment. These technologies hold tremendous promise for improving learning experiences and outcomes. Despite this promise, however, evidence is mounting that these new technologies tend to be used and accessed in unequal ways, and they may even exacerbate inequity.

There are several reasons why Universal Design is the model most Higher Education Disability service providers in North America are turning to. These include the need to manage resources of rapidly expanding service demands, building a more sustainable model of service provision, responding to the increasing complexity and diversity of diagnostic labels, its use of inclusive practices, and its foundation on a social model of disability.

Not new, but you may be interested in the Center for the Integration of Research, Teaching and Learning's (CIRTL) Inclusive pedagogy framework. CIRTL is focused on teaching science and technology subjects in higher education, but I think it is applicable in other disciplinary areas. Guest Post: Inclusive Pricing or Inclusive of All People? Understanding What’s “Inclusive” in Digital Textbook Publishing

Guest Post: Inclusive Pricing or Inclusive of All People? Understanding What’s “Inclusive” in Digital Textbook Publishing | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Editor’s Note: Today is Global Accessibility Awareness Day (GAAD) 2018. The purpose of GAAD is to foster conversation, reflection, and learning about digital access and people with different disabilities in order to move towards greater inclusion in technology and its applications. We are pleased to welcome guest author Stephanie Rosen to share some thoughts about accessibility and inclusion for digital textbooks. Stephanie is Associate Librarian and Accessibility Specialist at the University of Michigan Library, where she promotes equitable access to library resources for all users, regardless of ability or background. She holds a PhD in English from the University of Texas at Austin, and brings a background in disability studies to library administration and digital education.

The scholarly communications community is very familiar with the many varied meanings of the word “free” and how those definitions help shape or derail discussions. With recent offerings of “inclusive access” textbooks, we now need to carefully distinguish between the varied meanings of the word “inclusive.”

In a rapidly diversifying district with a largely white teaching force, how do you foster mutual trust and understanding? Send teachers to school.

By Carly Berwick, May 19, 2017
One day this past March, a middle school student placed a new Air Jordan on his desk at school in Montgomery County, Maryland. The boy, who is Latino, became fixated on the shoe, rubbing the leather and fingering the laces. His teacher, who is white, asked him to put it away, but the boy refused. He became “combative,” according to the teacher, and a tug-of-war ensued. Security was called to remove the shoe.

A strategic approach to inclusive practice in higher education | Jisc

A strategic approach to inclusive practice in higher education | Jisc | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
There's a significant upward trend in the number of disabled students entering higher education (HE). From 2016, funding changes in England mean that non-medical support such as note-taking, alternative formats and study support has been reduced, placing greater responsibility on institutions. The most cost effective response is to improve procurement processes and ensure inclusive practice is embedded in teaching, learning and assessment.
