How to Create QR Codes to Share Google Forms | Free Technology for Teachers | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Back in September I wrote about and made a video about how I'm using Google Forms as a sign-in/sign-out sheet for my classroom. Some of my colleagues are doing the same thing. One of my colleagues, Erin, had the good idea to create QRs code for the forms that students use the most and post them on the classroom wall.

Teaching Technology, Digital Literacy as Global Competencies

Teaching Technology, Digital Literacy as Global Competencies | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Let’s not teach technology, or just teach our standard curriculum with technology, but rather really have students become global citizens through technology. They can use technology to not only transform themselves but the world as well. Here are some things to consider, or possibly reconsider, when we use technology in school:

5 Powerful Questions Teachers Can Ask Students

5 Powerful Questions Teachers Can Ask Students | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

My first year teaching a literacy coach came to observe my classroom. After the students left, she commented on how I asked the whole class a question, would wait just a few seconds, and then answer it myself. "It's cute," she added. Um, I don't think she thought it was so cute. I think she was treading lightly on the ever-so shaky ego of a brand-new teacher while still giving me some very necessary feedback.

So that day, I learned about wait/think time. And also, over the years, I learned to ask better and better questions.

How Digital Literacy Sets You Up for Success and Ways to Improve It –

How Digital Literacy Sets You Up for Success and Ways to Improve It – | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Understanding your way around technology improves your chances in life. Digital literacy doesn’t mean reading a book online. The only difference between reading a physical book and reading online is a page versus a screen. There’s little learning in that because anyone can do it.

Digital literacy means much more than that. It means learning how to research, protect, and perform using digital tools and technology.

The Best Tools & Lessons For Teaching Information Literacy – Help Me Find More | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
As a companion “Best” list to The Best Resources For Learning Research & Citation Skills, I thought it would be useful to create this one.
I’m using the term “information literacy” here to describe assisting our students developing critical thinking skills to evaluate both web and content in other media forms. I’ve seen the term used to describe broader skills, too. Let me know if you think I’m off-based with my definition.
Elizabeth E Charles's insight:
A great selection of  tools and lessons that can be cherry picked in the teaching of information literacy.

9 Generic activities for exploiting infographics

9 Generic activities for exploiting infographics | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Infographics are a great source of information and make reading information from the computer screen much easier, but just showing students an infographic and telling them to study it isn’t the most effective way to exploit the medium.

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue

Goodbye Essay, Hello Podcast | Dialogue | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

One of the greatest conflicts between new and old literacies is many educators’ continuing belief that students’ analytical skills are not properly developed through the use of new media. There is some justification for this: Many student-created new media works are simplistic mishmashes of audio and video clips with no thesis or rationale. New media is used more as a toy than as an educational tool. It is no wonder that many teachers, uncomfortable with new media to begin with, see it as harming student literacy.
