Successfully Bringing Discussion Forums into Online Learning

Successfully Bringing Discussion Forums into Online Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
Compared to the online social experiences that students engage in daily, most class-based discussion forums are ineffective, poorly designed and actively counterproductive. Rather than sparking curiosity and motivation, they’re turning students into head-nodding automatons, like something out of Martin Scorcese’s “Hugo” but without the fantasy elements and sublime visual effects.

Supporting Underprepared Students in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Engaging students through a computer screen requires a unique approach to pedagogy and innovative course design.  The feeling of “getting it right” typically involves a good deal of testing and modification given the wide array of design formats and technology tools available, not to mention the varying needs of students, many of whom are underprepared for online learning (Bettinger & Loeb, 2017).

Common Student Challenges

In online courses, certain student challenges tend to come up time and again, which disrupts learning or impedes completing coursework on time.

Class Discussion: From Blank Stares to True Engagement

Class Discussion: From Blank Stares to True Engagement | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Thirty years of research in the scholarship of teaching and learning in higher education have demonstrated that when students are engaged in the classroom, they learn more (Pascarella and Terezini 1991, 2005). Classroom discussion is likely the most commonly used strategy for actively engaging students. Whether it is a seminar course centered on discussion or a lecture punctuated by moments of interaction with students, discussion is likely second only to lecture as the most frequently used pedagogical strategy.

Tips for Increasing Engagement in Online Learning

Tips for Increasing Engagement in Online Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

"Often times, tips for engaging learners in corporate online learning include external features and novel delivery methods. These range from using animations, “real-life” scenarios, game-design, leaderboards, and badges. But with learners actually spending more time learning and developing themselves outside of the corporate learning infrastructure, knowing what is appealing for them could have us directing our efforts and attention in a more focused approach that leads to greater engagement, activity and—more importantly—results.

Here are some tips based on learner preferences that could give you the results that you are seeking."

Shaona Williams's curator insight, December 11, 2015 8:04 AM

When one considers the many characteristics and skills to get success as an online student, the one that can have the greatest impact on the performance is self-discipline. It may be easy to simplify this term and equate it to getting your work done; however, it’s not only when you get your work done, but also how you get it done. There are rules, procedures, and expectations established by your instructor – but that may not be enough of a motivator to encourage you to do well in class. It is ultimately your ability to stay focused and on track that determines how you perform in class, which can be accomplished if you develop a strong mindset through personal self-discipline.

Keeping Students Engaged in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus

Keeping Students Engaged in the Online Classroom | Faculty Focus | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

As an online instructor, it's my job to not only teach, but to create a learning environment that facilitates student engagement in the classroom. Students enroll in online classes because of the need for scheduling flexibility, work-life-school balance, costs, and convenience. Although online learning holds many advantages, the potential drawbacks revolve around the lack of personal interaction between the instructor and student, as well as the student-to-student contact. Keeping students engaged in the course is a vital function of an effective instructor.

Pam McKinney here live blogging the final keynote from the LILAC conference featuring Professor  Alison Littlejohn, Dean of learning and teaching in the faculty of social sciences at the University of Glasgow.  Allison began by outlining the neo-liberalisation of the higher education sector, positioning students as consumers and the rise in importance of the national student survey.  Allison was involved with a project called “learning literacies in the digital age” which outlined the need for learning to focus on processes and literacies, not content. Allison discussed the power of MOOCs to disrupt education, and to give people the opportunity to learn in a different way, using digital technologies.

Five Ways to Build Community in Online Classrooms

Five Ways to Build Community in Online Classrooms | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
“I’m sorry to bother you, but…” was the opening line of every email I received in the first week of this semester. This line was usually followed by nothing that would actually bother me: a question about the week’s materials, a link to an interesting resource, a discussion about a potential research topic, and the like. This was all despite my many attempts to ensure that students did not feel like they were imposing whenever they contacted me: a pre-semester introductory email, a video welcoming them to the course, my biography and teaching philosophy, virtual office hours, and multiple reminders about my contact information. Yet, with all of my entreaties to reach out, I was still dealing with the real issues of isolation, fear, and frustration that results in students leaving their online courses. To combat these feelings, professors—myself included—have to deliberately, consistently, and relentlessly work to build student-faculty and student-student relationships in online courses.
