Time to retire from online learning?

Time to retire from online learning? | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

And then there’s MOOCs. I can’t express adequately just how pissed off I am about MOOCs – not the concept, but all the hubris and nonsense that’s been talked and written about them. At a personal level, it was as if 45 years of work was for nothing. All the research and study I and many others had done on what makes for successful learning online were totally ignored, with truly disastrous consequences in terms of effective learning for the vast majority of participants who took MOOCs from the Ivy League universities. Having ignored online learning for nearly 20 years, Stanford, MIT and Harvard had to re-invent online learning in their own image to maintain their perceived superiority in all things higher educational.

Yes! As an online learner and teacher I found the absence of best practices for online learning missing in all my Mooc participation. It would better be termed distance learning, falling back to the correspondence education of the past.

Lastly, I am concerned that the computer scientists seem to be taking over online education. Ivy League MOOCs are being driven mainly by computer scientists, not educators. Politicians are looking to computer science to automate learning in order to save money. Computer scientists have much to offer, but they need more humility and a greater willingness to work with other professionals, such as psychologists and teachers, who understand better how learning operates. This is a battle that has always existed in educational technology, but it’s one I fear the educators are losing. The result could be disastrous, but that’s a theme for a whole set of blog posts.

So this seems to be a good point to look not just at 2014, but where we might be going five to ten years from now, and in doing this, I want to include choice or human decision-making as well as technological determinism. ICDE » ICDE and partners launch Global Online Higher Education Report initiative | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Have you ever looked for good research data on the global impact of distance or online learning and discovered that this just doesn't exist?

CDE has partnered with UNESCO, the European Commission, the International Association of Universities, the Sloan Consortium, StudyPortals and Babson Survey Research Group to begin work on this formidable task.

[snip]

The global landscape of post-secondary education is in a period of dramatic change. A significant driver for this has been a dramatic rise in the use of technology and the extension of the traditional campus to more learners.

Although there is clear evidence of the growth of online learning, the global data remains anecdotal or limited in scope. There has been no formal effort or process to define online learning in the global context.

[snip]

The Global Online Higher Education Report (GlobalOHER) initiative is designed to address this deficiency by conducting a global survey and issuing a report that will provide:

Information on enrolments and programmes offered onlineInformation on the role of MOOCs around the worldInformation on the adoption of Open Education Resources, OERPerspectives on the importance of online learning in institutional strategiesThe challenges institutions face in delivering high quality programs and servicesA framework of the policy issues that institutions believe need to be addressed

Promise and/or Peril:  MOOCs and Open and Distance Education

Terry Anderson

Athabasca University

March 2013

The New York Times declared 2012 to be the year of the MOOC (Pappano, 2012) and certainly 2013 is becoming the year to talk about MOOCs! Questions related to the design and inherent pedagogies, registration numbers, persistence rates, revenue models, neo-liberal agenda, fears and aspirations of all of us in postsecondary education have been ignited by this combination of technology and pedagogy. MOOCs are rapidly becoming the type of disruptive technology described by Christensen (1997) as cheaper, smaller, initially less fully featured and attracting a new set of consumers into an existing market.

Do Teaching Online & Face-to-Face Classes Require Different Skills? | Wiziq.com

Do Teaching Online & Face-to-Face Classes Require Different Skills? | Wiziq.com | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

What skills do teachers need to teach online? Does professional development at your college look like this? Notice the teacher presenting is on the screen teaching at a distance while a technical person sits at the front of the class.

Many of  teachers think they can teach online and face-to-face classes the same way. According to a study conducted by Park, Johnson, Vath, Kubitskey, & Fishman (2013) on Examining the Roles of the Facilitator in Online and Face-to-Face Professional Development Contexts (Journal of Technology and Teacher Education, 21(2), 225-245), teachers need to cater to individual learners more online than face-to-face. In the face-to-face environments, students learn from each other and from the teacher. In the face-to-face class, the teacher is able to summarize the information for the students and get feedback from the students body language on how well they understood the information. In the online class, the teacher only knows whether the students understood or not from their writing. Teaching online requires that the teacher be very attentive and aware of the student’s individual interests, needs, and level of understanding.

Four Crucial Factors in High-Quality Distance Learning Courses

Four Crucial Factors in High-Quality Distance Learning Courses | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it
“Distance learning is here to stay. Educational institutions should have a vision for what type of distance learning programs they will implement and the standards they will hold to. Institutions will master distance learning, or in some cases, distance learning trends and demands will master the school.” This is the conclusion of Joseph McClary of Liberty University in his article, “Factors in High Quality Distance Learning Courses,” appearing in the Summer 2013 issue of the Online Journal of Distance Learning Administration. In it, he examines the components of a high quality distance learning course and some of the barriers to their development.
Damon Ing's curator insight, July 1, 2016 1:55 AM
As education professionals, we all want our online programs to be of high quality for distance learning courses. This article discusses some of the major points that are needed in a program to ensure its success and high quality nature. We have to ensure our programs are easy to understand and have a simplistic flow to them. If the program is easy to understand then learning can easily take place. To read the other major points read this article and be the best you can be as a developer of high quality distance learning courses.

Marketing the Library in an Online University to Help Achieve Information Literacy By Jennifer Murphy .pdf

An entrepreneurial librarian takes the embedded librarian concept one step further at a completely on-line university and markets the virtual library to students, faculty and administration rather than wait for customers to come to the library. York and Vance (2009) make the observation that “one obstacle to marketing an embedded librarian service is that there is no consensus on what to call this practice” (p. 206). This librarian agreed and as her goal was to “win favor and confidence by imperceptible degrees” (Merriam-Webster, 2013) she chose to call it insinuation of the library.

Can You Hear Me Now? Communicating Library Services to Distance Education Students and Faculty

Academic libraries have responded to the challenge of providing resources and services to off-campus users in a variety of innovative ways. However, recent survey results indicate that users are often not fully aware of what is available to them. This study of library web sites at 100 distance learning institutions seeks to establish a checklist of best practice in terms of library resources and services provided and to establish a template for the effective distance education gateway. The results of this research will provide a comprehensive guideline for librarians seeking to institute, improve, or better communicate distance education resources and services to students and faculty.

Essay on three key facts on distance education | Inside Higher Ed

Essay on three key facts on distance education | Inside Higher Ed | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

I know! I know! Everyone is sick to death of debating the pros and cons of MOOCs, the massive online courses that, depending on your viewpoint, will be the downfall or resurrection of higher education. But what's getting lost in all the noise is that MOOCs are far from the only game in town when it comes to online education.

Key in determining the effectiveness of a course, both online and on the ground, is how actively it is being taught and how effectively it is engaging students.

Educators are creating and tweaking a number of very different learning models to engage students in "active learning," both in the physical classroom and the virtual world – often in intriguing combinations.
