Libraries: championing digital information on campus

Alison Mackenzie explains how a new project is looking at the role university libraries play in developing digital literacy

The Society of College, National and University Libraries (SCONUL) is working on a project to review the roles academic libraries are playing in developing the digital literacies within their own institutions, and across the information profession. Academic librarians have a long tradition of championing the effective use of information. The SCONUL project is designed to reveal how libraries and librarians are shaping their services to maximise the opportunities and benefits of working in a digital environment.

Research Article: “Why Some Students Continue to Value Individual, Face-to-Face Research Consultations in a Technology-Rich World” | LJ INFOdocket | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

For decades, academic librarians have provided individual research consultations for students. There is little information, however, about why students schedule consultations, the kinds of assistance students feel are provided by librarians during consultations, and what students find valuable about face-to-face consultations, even with the availability of online research help. This exploratory, qualitative study of individual research consultations at the University of Vermont gathered students’ views on these questions. The findings will help librarians better understand how individual consultations serve students and what role consultations should play in the mix of reference services offered.

Is Content Curation in Your Skill Set? It Should Be. | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

Curation is a growing need in organizations, and as such, a growing competency for those focused on worker performance. At the same time, the vision of what this competency looks like in practice is cloudy. How will what we do look different when we add curation to our skill sets?

Sure it is!!  Last week I showed my students how to scoopit.  I thought that since they seem to love Facebook, Scoopit was going to be a wow experience for them.  However, contrary to my expectations most of them did not show a real interest, or at least the kind of interest I expected.  What a pain!  Maybe it is a matter of time, culture, love for reading and writing, etc.  From a group of 12 youngers, only 2 of them said:  Thanks teacher, I like it!  Well... I will keep on trying...

AraceliGF's curator insight, February 9, 2014 4:40 AM

Good article on content curation. So important nowadays ,with so much information around us, we need tools to process it (such as netvibes, diigo, delicious, feedly, etc.)

8 Ways The Librarian Of The Future Will Keep Themselves Busy

What the library of the future will look like is kind of up for debate.

Will it be full of tablets that use Augmented Reality to search for physical resources?

Will it be a mix of physical and digital resources that complement one another–digital logs and databases of physical texts?

Or will libraries–as we currently know them–disappear altogether?

librarysciencelist.com put together the following infographic that reviews the typical ideas–we use the internet to find information, we tend to use smartphones, and we almost all use Google–#digitalliteracy, etc.

The 8 Roles of The 21st Century Librarian ~ Educational Technology and Mobile Learning | Information and digital literacy in education via the digital path | Scoop.it

A couple of months ago I shared with you here in Educational Technology and Mobile Learning a graphic that features 27 things teacher librarians  do and today I am sharing with you another equally interesting graphic but this time it outlines the roles of the future librarians. While these roles have been particularly conceived to showcase the skills a future librarian needs, I  see them as an arsenal of skills that teachers and educators need to master as well.

Embedding Guides Where Students Learn: Do Design Choices and Librarian Behavior Make a Difference?

This study investigated whether library guides embedded in a university's learning management system fulfill their mission to promote library resources and maintain a librarian presence in the online course environment. Specifically, the study examined whether design elements, promotional practices, or other behaviors influenced guide use. It questioned whether students located the library guides and, if so, did students find the guides helpful. Results confirmed that students who used library guides found the guides helpful. Select faculty and librarian behaviors may also influence student use of library guides. Promotion and marketing practices, however, are not the only factors encouraging students to use library guides.

The Changing Landscape For Libraries & Librarians In The Digital Age

The advent of the Internet has placed the need for libraries, and librarians under scrutiny.  Now that everything in print is available online, do we really need physical libraries and librarians anymore?  Of course we do…now, more than ever before.

According to Luis Herrera, city librarian of San Francisco, “Libraries are more relevant than ever.  They are a place for personal growth and reinvention, a place for help in navigating the information age, a gathering place for civic and cultural engagement and a trusted place for preserving culture.” (Herrera, 2012)  Over the last decade libraries have kept pace with changing technologies and increased their relevancy even while traditional bookstores are still learning to navigate the digital era.

EDUCAUSE Review Online

Higher education institutions are prodigious content producers. Although there are long-standing policies in place to permit the curation of instructional content and of the transactional artifacts of the learning experience, librarians have traditionally concentrated more attention on research. This stance is quite justifiable given the massive amount of research data being generated today as a result of revised data-planning requirements by grant-funding agencies. However, with the tacit rules governing instruction and with market pressures rapidly evolving, has the time come for librarians to intentionally curate instructional content, in all its unwieldy diversity? And as we come to better understand the lasting value of data analytics, what would be the consequences of inaction?
