Special Issue on Social Media in Higher Education - The Internet and Higher Education

Special Issue on Social Media in Higher Education - The Internet and Higher Education | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Social media is a trendy topic at the moment, having received much mass media and consumer attention for its widespread adoption during the last decade. Social media has influenced practice in many communication-oriented fields, such as marketing, customer service, and journalism. In education, the hype surrounding social media has created a lot of speculation about how it might be used in a higher education environment. Perspectives range from believing higher education should capitalize on technologies and perhaps electronic devices that students are already using for personal reasons to struggling to see how to effectively integrate a technology whose naturalistic use has been so heavily informal and user-driven into a setting known for its more formal and structured experiences.

Twitter en educación... ¿Para qué? ¿Cómo?

Twitter en educación... ¿Para qué? ¿Cómo? | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

How to use (and derail) social media in education | Ditch That Textbook

How to use (and derail) social media in education | Ditch That Textbook | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it
Social media has changed the world, and it has the potential to impact education in powerful ways. It can be implemented in innovative ways or it can be totally derailed.

Via Adelina Silva
Alfredo Corell's insight:

Before, we networked and chatted at parties and get-togethers to get caught up. Now, we check a Facebook feed.

Before, we had to pay long-distance phone bills just to hear people’s voices. Now, we can video chat with Skype or Google Hangouts for free.

Before, we had to have a book published or a TV show broadcasted. Now, we can create blogs and podcasts to share our ideas with the world instantly.

Before, we waited for the evening TV news or the morning newspaper. Now, we can check instant Twitter updates on just about anything.

Social media has also changed education, but it hasn’t lived up to the vast potential it has.

Tips for developing a social media strategy

Tips for developing a social media strategy | Create, Innovate & Evaluate in Higher Education | Scoop.it

Some basic social media strategy tips
If those who make up your audience use social media – and they do - you will need a strategy.
If you don't have one, you will lose part of your audience.
Your social media strategy needs to be based on engagement and participation. Unlike traditional broadcasting and publishing - which was usually one-way - social media is a two-way conversation.
How to join that conversation and what to contribute is the issue. It's about tone, language, timing and values. And it's about offering a unique differential that is compelling and stimulates debate.
