How to tell if you're "voice loser" and how blowing into a straw can save your voice (video) | Vox.com | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

"People who talk from deep in their chests...tend to put more strain on their vocal cords (from over-usage) than people who talk from higher up, closer to the front of the face. It's possible to train yourself to become more of the latter."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

IF YOU'VE EVER STRUGGLED THROUGH A SESSION OR AUDITION BECAUSE YOUR VOICE WASN'T 100%, YOU NEED TO WATCH THESE VIDEOS STAT!!!

Some of you may already be familiar with vocologist Ingo Titze's famous straw warm-ups that, if practiced regularly, can strengthen your vocal cords and train you to produce sounds in the healthiest way possible.

Even if you're not, it's worth investing a few minutes of your time to learn these helpful, quick-fix techniques, which can help you stay productive and in top form vocally even on days when you've over-used your voice and it starts to sound tired and hoarse.

If you have time, we recommend watching both videos, the first with Ingo Titze, who created these exercises, and the second with vocal coach, Tom Burke, who demonstrates the right (and wrong) ways to do the straw exercises.

‘NPR Voice’ Has Taken Over the Airwaves | NY Times...and Why Voice Actors Should Care

‘NPR Voice’ Has Taken Over the Airwaves | NY Times...and Why Voice Actors Should Care | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
With the rise of amateur broadcasters comes a plague of pregnant pauses and off-kilter pronunciations.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Does this mean that you should look for Ira Glass to replace James Earl Jones in the Darth Vader flashback scene in upcoming "Star Wars VII: The Force Awakens"?

Okay, we probably wouldn't go that far and we suspect that there will always be a place in voiceover for the Morgan Freemans, Benedict Cumberbatches and Judi Denches of the world, but it is important for the rest of us to note this unpolished everyguy/gal voice trend is being reflected in current advertising, too.

However, beware that if you choose to imitate it, please proceed with caution...While less is definitely more nowadays, "conversational and real" is king and you don't necessarily need "Voice of God" to sell a product, you still, however, need to be connected to the copy and the listener, and sound authentic and engaged. Examples, they cite, such as Ira and Marc Maron are "unpolished." but still genuinely curious and passionate about whatever they are discussing. A listless, flat read is still a listless, flat read and no sponsor will pay you to do that.

Happens even to the best of us...Peter Dinklage's voiceover for "Destiny" replaced by Nolan North

Happens even to the best of us...Peter Dinklage's voiceover for "Destiny" replaced by Nolan North | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

"Peter Dinklage's voice performance in Destiny will be replaced by Nolan North as of this September's upcoming expansion The Taken King...North has re-recorded all of the existing dialogue for Dinklage's character Ghost, along with new content for The Taken King...

Dinklage has not contributed new lines for the character since the base game was released. Prior to that, some of the lines he recorded were cut after the game's beta....Bungie has not yet given a reason for the change in voice actor, but it sounds like North has been signed up to play the character for the foreseeable future.

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

If you've ever been replaced on a voiceover project (and that happens to almost all of us who voice act at some point), this news might be of some small consolation to you.

We all know how terrific Emmy-, Golden Globe and New York Film Critic's award-winning actor, Peter Dinklage, can be, so it's hard to figure out what might have gone wrong here, but fans have been moaning about his flat, "phoned-in" delivery since the "Destiny" game trailers were first released. You can listen to the original recorded VO, and judge for yourself whether Bungie games made the right decision.

Our guess is that the less than stellar performance was probably due to a combination of factors; an actor unfamiliar with the process and requirements of recording game voiceover coupled with some "star struck" directors/producers who may have been shy about offfering "Tyrion Lannister" acting advice.

Good article despite misleading title and we know why..."5 Reasons Voiceover Actors Should Get Into Gaming | Backstage | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
With video games growing in scope, actors with voiceover experience are taking on the challenge and leveling up!
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Good, solid advice on the best way for voice actors to get cast in video games: work on developing great acting chops! To that we'd add, be extremely versatile, proficient at doing accents and have a ready-to-go arsenal of various character types to draw upon.

We also appreciate that the article mentions the sizeable output of work that is expected from an actor daily and the fact that is ZERO time to prepare ahead. You are expected to show up and be ready to start immediately.

Be aware, however, that the title of the article is misleading. They don't actually provide "5 Reasons," for anything, but we get why they gave it that title. If they actually called it what it should be titled-- "Why You Need To Have Great Acting Skills & Discipline To Work on Video Games"---fewer people would read it, because it's less catchy and sounds really difficult. If you're not already an accomplished actor, but are determined to work in games, it's certainly doable, but not easy. Be prepared to work long and hard to develop the necessary skill set.

Creating with Pro Tools | First.
Pro Tools | First is a very powerful media creation tool and is a perfect way for beginners to learn the basics of recording and to produce pro quality music and audio tracks. Although it is the perfect tool for music creation, Pro Tools | First can also be used for audio edit applications such as the spoken word, voice over editing, sound effects design and for mastering tracks from video editors.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Free ProTools? Thee must be a catch, right? Some add-ons will cost extra, but from the looks of it, this free version will come already equipped with all he tools voice actors need to record , edit and master basic audio files. If you want to view a head-to-head comparison with the full version of ProTools: http://www.avid.com/US/products/pro-tools-software-comparison-table.

The only concern we have is regarding file storage. The comparison chart states,"Three; projects stored in the cloud; additional projects may be purchased from the Avid Store in the near future;" however the accompanying article would seem to imply that you'll be able to export the files to your local computer once you've finished mixing: "Pro Tools | First only saves projects to the cloud in your Avid Master Account and three are included free...You can also complete a project and export the final stereo mix and then delete that project to give you back the space needed to start a new project."

If completed projects can be saved locally, we don't foresee any problems for voice actors. However, if there is a cost associated with exporting files, as they've already announced there will be for additional cloud storage, then we'll have to see what the costs are before determing whether it's worth making the switch to ProTools | First..

In Germany, audiobooks are insanely popular and the voice actors are more popular than Hasselhoff | CBC.ca | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

"Each year, Germans buy more audiobooks than e-books, and the voice actors are as big as rock stars. This past summer, 20,000 Germans filled a Berlin stadium just to listen to the most popular audiobook series. Tomas Urbina gets inside the audiobook craze.

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Sprechen sie Deutsche? If so you might want to consider moving to Germany where voice actors are treated like rock stars!

In this Canadian Broadcasting Company podcast, reporter Tomas Urbina explores the reasons why Germans can't get enough of audiobooks. Last year Germans bought a record 14 million audiobooks and that number is expected to explode next year when the tax on audiobooks is cut in half. The most popular book narrators have legions of rabid fans who turn out by the thousands to hear them perform! (Podcast audio controls are under first image on the right.)

Make sure to view the slideshow to see what an audience of 20,000 people in an auditorium listening with rapt attention to a bunch of voice actors looks like. Pretty impressive.

'Exodus': How Ridley Scott Chose His 11-Year-Old Voice of God - Hollywood Reporter

'Exodus': How Ridley Scott Chose His 11-Year-Old Voice of God - Hollywood Reporter | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

In Exodus, director Ridley Scott has chosen various ways to convey God's communication with Moses, played by Christian Bale. When God speaks directly to Moses, it is through a young boy, Malak, played by 11-year-old Brit Isaac Andrews.

Sacred texts give no specific depiction of God, so for centuries artists and filmmakers have had to choose their own visual depiction," Scott tellsTHR. "Malak exudes innocence and purity, and those two qualities are extremely powerful."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Well, this puts a whole new spin on "Voice-of-God" delivery doesn't it? An interesting, creative and adorable choice, Mr. Scott, however we still doubt that Morgan Freeman is losing sleep over the prospect of being replaced by 11-year-old boys.

By the way, we also noticed in the trailer that Christian Bale still seems to be using his gravelly, "downed a quart of Jack" Batman voice. Uh...Dude, you're playing Moses, not the Caped Crusader!

In case you've forgotten what Christain Bale really sounds like, it's nothing like Batman or Moses: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-FN91RaSN2I

A salute to actor & voice actor, Robin Williams (1951-2014): "I do voices" from "Mrs. Doubtfire"

Daniel Hillard (Robin Williams) is no ordinary father, so when he learns his ex-wife (Sally Field) needs a housekeeper, he applies for the job.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

We honor and celebrate the genius of actor, comic, improvisor, voice talent and fellow Bay Area resident, Robin Williams. Everyone knows that, as a voice actor, Robin set the bar impossibly high for all (celebrity and non-) voice actors who came after him with his inspired performance as the "Genie" in "Aladdin, but do you remember that he played a semi-employed voice actor in his role in Mrs. Doubtfire? Perhaps there are even some of you who became aware that there was such a thing as voice acting because of that performance.

RIP, Mr. Williams. Thanks for all the many great, touching performances, belly laughs and sharing your gifts and most of all, your humanity with us.

Five Big Mistakes Actors Make That Stop Them From Getting Work | Huffington Post

Five Big Mistakes Actors Make That Stop Them From Getting Work | Huffington Post | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
They say success is opportunity meets preparation. So here are my top five tips to make sure you are prepared and stop making the mistakes that stop you having the best career you can. Here are five mistakes actors make in their career that stop them being successful.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Actor/writer Catherine Balavage doesn't mince words, which is exactly what we like about her on-point advice to fellow actors.

If your mistakes are marketing yourself wrong or not continuously working on your skills, the good news is that both of these can be remedied quickly, as long as you're willing to put in the time and effort.

Fixing the other mistakes she mentions is not quite as easy. Overcoming these problems requires. introspection, self-awareness and maturity, but it can be done. We've repeatedly witnessed once-arrogant, full-of-themselves actors becoming far more considerate, appreciative and humble over time. How does such a miraculous transformation occur? It's called living the life of a professional actor; experiencing rejection on a daily basis year after year tends to bring even the most hyper-inflated egos back down to earth .

Incidentally, if you should gain a reputation for being a jerk, word gets around quickly because the film, theater and TV industries are "tiny" as Catherine rightly observes. Consider then that the pro-level voiceover world is even smaller, especially after so many East Coast and West Coast talent agencies merged. If you're impossible to work with in New York, don't think that the agent you're trying to sign with in LA won't find out about it.

Lastly, make sure you understand and internalize the fact that no one, but no one, is "entitled" to an acting career. As Daryl Eisenberg, the casting director interviewed in the article reminds aspiring actors, "You are not special. You do not deserve to be a super-successful world famous actor. The world does not owe you anything. A sense of entitlement is not going to do you any favours."

If you doubt Mr. Eisenberg, watch any "where are they now?" type reality show and you'll discover that 99 times out of 100, the fastest, surest path to becoming a has-been is the failure to recognize that there is a huge element of chance involved in your success. Not everyone is as lucky as David Caruso who got a second chance with "CSI:Miami," after badly blowing his first one, and to his great credit, made the most of it; proof positive that actors can indeed learn from their past mistakes.

A video that will have voice actors & actors wincing in recognition... (Video) | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

The reason why professionals deliver great service is no secret. We have invested a lot of time and efforts into perfecting our skills...So, when clients try the bargaining approach because they “didn’t budget for it,” a lot of us feel taken for granted and disrespected.

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Very funny, only slightly exaggerated, but sadly not all that far off the mark. When put into different context, we can see how absurd and insulting some "proposals" from clients really are. No one who understands the real value of what they do would agree to do a job on "spec," or at a huge discount now with the promise that it will be made up to them on some undefined "future" job.

Unfortunately, as we all know this kind of bargaining goes on daily, and actors, voice actors or any artists or other freelancers who are party to this have no right to complain when the client offers them even less the next time or gives the job to someone else who is willing to work even more cheaply.

Microsoft have today announced Skype's forthcoming introduction of Skype TX, a tool designed for broadcasters to enable use of studio quality audio and video streams into productions. This could be brilliant news for voiceover artists and production houses around the globe, to be able to seamlessly
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

UK-based voice actor, Richard Heathcote, posted this tantalizing piece of news today...Microsoft has just announced a product, Skype TX, that would allow clients to record broadcast audio and video remotely via the Internet.

Yes, there are already several other companies which have been  working on similar products with varying degress of success, and while some have gotten much closer recently, none has succeeded in equalling the quality of ISDN.

Will Microsoft's deep pockets, massive marketing arm and well-known "Skype" brand succeed in delivering a real, moderately-priced ISDN-replacement that professional broadcasters and studios will actually accept and use? And if recording broadcast-quality audio remotely becomes univerally available and affordable to most voice actors, how will that change the competitive landscape? It could definitely get interesting. Stay tuned.

We want our technology to help us, but we want to be the bosses of it, so we are more likely to opt for a female interface.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Here we go again...the one extremely lucrative area of voiceover where women outperform men and it's due to "sexism" according to Wired Magazine's headline.  We've always heard "market research" given as the justification for using men to do the vast majority of high-paying movie trailer and network TV promo work, but never "sexism." Interesting....

Sensational headline aside, the rest of the article is timely and worth the read, and delves into some of the cultural and societal reasons why most of us prefer to hear female voices from our high-tech devices.

The author is also correct in pointing out that as we engage more and more with the Internet of things, with each "thing" having her/his own voice and "personality," we will more than likely start to hear more variety in the gender and types of voices used for these types of applications.

Robert De Niro gives amazing, brutally honest graduation speech to NYU Tisch School of the Arts grads | NY Daily News | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
Double Oscar-winning actor Robert De Niro told NYU’s art school grads Friday congratulations and then quickly added, “And you’re f-----.”
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Funny, honest and inspiring all at the same time, Robert De Niro schools graduating Tisch school students on the harsh realities of choosing a career in the arts, while at the same time providing them with some reassurance that they made the right choice if they believe in their gut that the arts are truly their calling. (We don't know how reassuring it was for parents , however, who dropped serious coin to send their kids to Tisch where tuition is $50,000/year.)

There is a lot of practical advice for actors, including a valuable insight that the arts are collaborative, and you're part of a team of people assigned to accomplishing specific tasks in service of fulfillng a director's artistic vision; it's your job as a professional actor ito do your utmost to help the director fulfill his or her vision, even when your concept of how your character should be played is at odds with theirs. He makes the important point that this is no less true for artists of his caliber and experience, than for those just starting out. Well worth your watch.

Radio, TV and voiceover performer Gary Owens died on Feb. 12 at his home in the Encino neighborhood of Los Angeles. Owens, who was 80, had been a diabetic since the age of 8.

Owens was probably best known as the announcer on NBC’s “Rowan and Martin’s Laugh-In” (1968-73), with his trademark hand-over-the-ear announcing style. .The phrase Gary created on his KMPC radio show, “Beautiful downtown Burbank,” later became a nightly catchphrase on Johnny Carson’s “Tonight Show.”

Owens also lent his voice to more than 3,000 cartoons, providing the voice of “Space Ghost” as well as Blue Falcon, Roger Ramjet, Powdered Toast Man and even Batman...Owens had a mellifluous baritone voice with impeccable nuanced timing, and was equally adept at comedy or deadpan delivery."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

We are  so sorry to hear the sad news of Gary Owen's passing. A true original, Mr. Owens was an exceptionally gifted voice actor, writer and class act. How Voice Actor R.C. Bray Went From Hating Books To Narrating Them for a Living

How Voice Actor R.C. Bray Went From Hating Books To Narrating Them for a Living | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
R.C. Bray Success Story
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

If you need a kick in the rear to get started auditioning for audiobooks, take inspiration from the story of how R.C. Bray went from doing over-amped, hard-sell car ads for a local car dealer to narrating audiobooks for a living.

R.C. still can't believe his good fortune. He gets to do work he loves on his own terms:  "I get to work from home. I get to bring my kids to school, get them off the bus. I’m here for dinner. I’m here during the day if the kids are sick. I can work as much as I want during the day or as little as I want. So long as I make the deadline, it’s freedom and fun. And I’m exactly where I want to be. I’m so fulfilled with this it’s not even funny.”

We'd be remiss if we didn't point out that R.C. was already a trained actor before he started auditioning for audiobooks, and by "trained," we don't mean an occasional voiceover workshop here and there. Becoming a trained actor is a process that you need to experience, learn and grow from and unfortunately for those of you looking for shortcuts, that process takes years.

Don't believe us? It's no coincidence that almost all the top audiobook readers are trained actors. You can bet that anyone who tries to convince you otherwise, probably has a ve$ted interest in doing so.

"We have to learn to kind of embrace what makes us unique, and embrace our strength and then if people don’t like it, f**k it.

- Idina Menzel

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

We cannot stress the importance of having confidence as an actor or voice actor enough, but as this article from ActorHub UK correctly points out, "there is no quick fix to becoming confident, it takes time." Some very good advice on the behaviors you need to develop and reinforce to boost your confidence over time.

You should also start working on developing habit  #8, " Stop comparing" as early in your career as possible. There is no worse career- or momentum-killer than constantly weighing your progress and performances against everyone else's, because you can't ever know what everyone else's experience and backgrounds are. For all you know, the "new guy" in your acting class that you' keep comparing yourself to unfavorably, has an MFA in Dramatic Arts from Yale  That doesn't necessarily make him intrinsically more talented than you; just much more experienced and confident. It also doesn't mean that you can't get there eventually with time, practice and good coaching.

5 Essential Steps to Get the Acting Career You Want | Acting Coach Scotland | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

Acting Coach Mark Westbrook describes the 5 Steps that actors must take to progress their acting career:

Get GOOD

In order to get noticed, you need to get good.

Get NOTICED

It’s pointless getting good, if you don’t give yourself opportunities to be seen, and seen by the right people.

Get SIGNED

Having an agent IS very important. Of course, you can work without them, but to have access to the premium job opportunities, you need an agent.

Get WORKING

Once you get a job, you can’t stop.

Get BETTER

They say that the best way to learn is through doing. The secret to getting better is to learn FROM doing, not through doing "

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

We can always count on one of our favorites, Mark Westbrook aka "Acting Coach of Scotland" to cut straight to the chase and speak the unvarnished truth,

What happens to Morgan Freeman's voice when he inhales a little helium? You're about to find out.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

The great Mr. Freeman on helium, sounding like the Mayor of Munchkinland, all in the name of science.

Word of caution: don't try this at home, kids! In case your mother didn't warn you, inhaling helium is supposed to  do something bad to your brain cells, but we can't remember what exactly, because we inhaled too much helium.

If You Take Your Voiceover Career Seriously, Self-Promotion Is A Necessity, Not An Option | Peter K. O'Connell

If You Take Your Voiceover Career Seriously, Self-Promotion Is A Necessity, Not An Option | Peter K. O'Connell | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it

"I am a small business owner who has kids to feed and a mortgage to pay…and that money does NOT come in unless I am out there telling people what I do and how I do it and how what I do will help their business. And I AM the company. Whatever the tag line, no matter the iconography, at the end of the day I, as the professional voice-over talent, am the brand. I am selling myself – just not on a street corner…yet."

Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Voice actor and coach, Peter K. O'Connell is right about this. If you are a voice actor, you have to understand that you are running a small business, and you need to approach your career with that mindset. Since advertising, promoting and marketing are an integral part of any business plan, that means that you have to do these things, too. You can't expect others (like the agent fairy perhaps?) to do them for you.

Like Peter, we too have encountered far too many well-trained and talented voice actors who view self-promotion as distasteful or somehow beneath them. They're waiting for someone else (agents, business managers, publicists)  to do the heavy-lifting for them. but It just doesn't work that way for 97% of voice actors in the real world. Even the really, really talented ones.

It's no coincidence that most successful voice actors we know---especially the ones who have managed to sustain a career over a long period of time---are very good at both voiceover and marketing/networking. Almost all have agents, many hire business managers and publicists, but they understand that they have to work with them in a partnership; not abdicate all responsibility for their careers to them. This is why the most successful actors in the world also have their own production companies. If Brad Pitt and Jennifer Lawrence don't feel like self-marketing is beneath them, why should you?

Smart tips that will help you eliminate or fix 95% of PPopping PPlosives PProblems in Voiceover Recordings | Lance Blair | Sirenetta Leoni Inside Voiceover—Information + Insights On Voice Acting | Scoop.it
Ways to fix plosives and popped ps in a vocal track or voice over.
Sirenetta Leoni's insight:

Voice actor and former recording engineer, Lance Blair, has posted a list of excellent tips for minimizing and/or fixing popping-plosives 's when you record. Some you've probably heard before, but all are worth learning and trying.

The one the we found particularly helpful in this article , and that was new to us, is his suggestion to: 1) highlight the plosive on the screen; 2) then run a hard cut of all frequencies below 80Hz, just on the "pop".

We tried it with Adobe Audition, by applying the "Parametric Equalizer" that you can find under "Effects"> "Filters and EQ"  to the pop area and found that, with the exception of a few horrific pops that we recorded becuase we were deliberately tryin to pop, this method works well and is much faster and easier than other methods we've tried in the past, like deleting the worst part of the pop, fading the pop, reducing the level of the pop; or usually some combination of all three.

To do it, we simply used the the <Default> option, changed the Frequency to "80" Mhz in the first column where you see "HP"(High-Pass) filter, then clicked on "Apply." The steps may be slightly different depending on which recording software you use, but most of them offer a similar feature which allows you to eliminate frequencies below a certain level. Just remember that when you run it, apply it only to popped section you've identified on your screen.

For additional great tips on reducing unwanted recording noises, we refer you to another really useful article from audio engineer, Randy Coppinger, we linked to last year: http://sco.lt/6GK2r3. As Randy advisies, proper pop filter placement and using two pop filters are excellent and cheap ways to ensure that your pops are kept to a minimum so that the instances where you actually need to filter them out are kept to a minimum.
