"It's said that there are three rules to success in business...

'Know your people, Know your people, Know your people.'

A great way to help that happen is through your internal magazine. A well-considered employee presence delivered with a personal, human touch helps to create a powerful sense of belonging and ownership – it’s ‘our magazine’ representing ‘our people’."

Read the full article to find out more about these ways to go about introducing employees to the rest of the organisation by injecting some energy in to your employee interviews:

  • Take inspiration from "Meet the Team" pages on the web
  • Revamp your questions
  • Repackage the feature
  • Ask employees to interview each other
Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

More great ideas for your employee news or comings & goings posts.  A long time ago, I used a trading card concept as a way for new teams to learn about one another at a staff meeting.  It was fun and easy to do once the template was created - and staff members could easily fill out themselves.

Exploit Employment Milestones for Easy Intranet Content | Gatehouse

Exploit Employment Milestones for Easy Intranet Content | Gatehouse | Internal Communications Tools | Scoop.it

Does your organisation distribute long service awards to people who’ve worked there for a certain number of years?

Then, get in touch with a short questionnaire that they can fill out in a few minutes. You can snag some fun intranet content, and give the employee a nice write-up to commemorate their employment milestone. Try asking questions like:

- What are your 3 favourite memories of working here?

- How has the company changed since you joined?

- What were your first impressions of the company?

- What’s been the most challenging period of your time here?

- If you travel back in time and give yourself a piece of advice on your first day, what would it be?

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

I would also ask questions around success.

- What do think was the must important or successful event or activity?

- What is your most significant achievement or legacy?

Pfizer takes to Tumblr to share employee stories | PMLiVE (blog)

Pfizer takes to Tumblr to share employee stories | PMLiVE (blog) | Internal Communications Tools | Scoop.it

"Pfizer has joined Tumblr for a new blog that promotes the contribution its employees make to people's health.  The company is publishing a post each day to its Pfizer365.com site, which is so far home to 45 days' worth of stories."

Access the Pfizer365 site to see how they're sharing stories about their employees to build connections with other employees and customers, as well as help in the recruitment process.

Kim Zinke (aka Gimli Goose)'s insight:

I like the concept.  Tell the story of your employees both what they do at and outside work.  A human face is brought to this large company. They're just regular folks doing their jobs and helping in the community.  While the stories are short and easy to read, they still have a corporate feel about them.  In my opinion, it would have a more engaging feel and impact if it was told in a more casual tone or felt like it was being told by the employee.

“What do you do?” Explain people’s jobs for valuable intranet content | Gatehouse

“What do you do?” Explain people’s jobs for valuable intranet content | Gatehouse | Internal Communications Tools | Scoop.it

The average employee might know where each departments sits, but when it comes to what each person does… no chance.

You can produce quick and easy content for your intranet by approaching people around the business and asking them to explain their job. You need questions that come at their job from a surprising or unusual angle. Try:

- How would you explain your job to a 9 year-old?

- Who do you talk to the most in your line of work?

- What aspect of your work do you think about at home?

- What’s the most satisfying aspect of your job?

- What’s the most dangerous part of what you do?
