90 VR Education Apps for Vive, Rift and WMR – Immersive Learning News

90 VR Education Apps for Vive, Rift and WMR – Immersive Learning News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
When it comes to locating educational content for a PC-powered VR headset like a Vive, Rift or WMR, it can be a little tricky for three main reasons:
1. There are multiple app stores to find content and some of the content can only be found in certain app stores.

2. Not all the stores have an easy to find Education section.

3. Some content which would be great in the classroom isn’t actually tagged as educational.

Students can go around the world and beyond through virtual reality - The State Press | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Virtual reality could be a dream come true, or a nightmare in the flesh. It could be anything that it is programmed to be with no real limitations.

ASU, with its everlasting call to innovation, has started to utilize VR goggles for an online biology lab.

ASU has partnered with Google and Labster, a virtual lab simulation company specifically dedicated toward education STEM subject matters, to give students in an online Biology 181 class the ability to view traditional lab situations.

The students can purchase their own VR headsets or borrow a pair from the school. There are currently 30 students in the course, and there's potential for expansion.

All You Need to Know About Buying Virtual Reality Headsets, Goggles, and Glasses

All You Need to Know About Buying Virtual Reality Headsets, Goggles, and Glasses | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it

"With virtual reality being one of the biggest trends to hit edtech in years, educators need to know as much about this technology as possible. As a matter of fact, education futurists are predicting that this technology will be instrumental in the future of education, right up there with personalized learning. In a previous article, we provided our readers with a list of the best virtual reality games on the market. As a follow-up, this article will teach them all they need to know about virtual reality headsets, goggles, and glasses. The first thing that you need to know is that when people use the terms virtual reality headsets, goggles, and glasses, they are mainly talking about the same thing.

For the purpose of this article, we decided to use the term headset, because it is the most widely used term to refer to an apparatus used to power a virtual reality environment. Think of the games as the software, and headsets as the devices that run the software. These parts make virtual reality possible."

Recently, the world of virtual reality was shaken up when the popular Merge Cube by Merge VR dropped in price from $15 to just a dollar at many Walmart stores. If you haven’t held a Merge Cube yet, they're made of a soft rubber material that’s comparable to a stiffer stress ball. Will Virtual Reality Drive Deeper Learning?

Will Virtual Reality Drive Deeper Learning? | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
Though no hard numbers are available yet on how many K–12 classrooms are using virtual or augmented reality, new estimates suggest the technology could reach 15 million students by 2025.

But without research to show the impact, experiences like landing on the moon or the sinking of the Titanic could be closer to entertainment than education, argue critics, who say much of what’s being marketed as virtual reality is not groundbreaking—or even new. Computer scientists first began experimenting with “virtual experiences” in the 1950s, and by the 1980s goggles and gloves had been developed to simulate immersion in a virtual world.
Emily Sandoval's curator insight, May 19, 2020 4:53 PM
I am a firm believer that virtual reality can enhance learning. Like the article states, virtual reality can help surgeons practice surgeries before doing them in real life. It can also help students work from home, attend science labs without the mess or pressure, and it can be used to animate history. I look forward to seeing virtual reality being used more often in the classroom. Regardless of what the critics say, it can be used for much more than just entertainment purposes.

Using Virtual Reality to Improve Student’s Job Interviewing Skills - The Tech Edvocate

Using Virtual Reality to Improve Student’s Job Interviewing Skills - The Tech Edvocate | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
One of the most exciting emerging technologies is virtual reality: whether you are walking through an art museum thousands of miles from your home or swooping down into a volcano, VR promises amazing experiences to its users. One potential area of VR use that is just beginning to merit some attention is using VR to prepare students for job interviews. Given how important an interview can be—and how little experience students have with them—it is no surprise that a job interview can turn into a stressful or unpleasant situation that does not feature a student at his or her best. VR is one potentially powerful tool that can change this dynamic and allow students to shine.

Schools and Colleges Try Virtual Reality Science Labs. But Can VR Replace a Cadaver? | EdSurge News | iPads, MakerEd and More in Education | Scoop.it
When Case Western Reserve University launches a new health education campus with the Cleveland Clinic next year, one feature will be conspicuously absent. There will be no place for cadavers.

The school plans to replace the usual anatomy labs with a new series of hands-on experiences, including a virtual-reality simulation.
Mary Hollars's curator insight, September 16, 2021 11:17 PM
I don't feel that VR or simulations should replace all learning in the classroom.  Students still need real-life experiences to make connections in learning concepts.  Simulations are meant to be an added tool, not a total replacement.  I understand the importance of cost, but if we are talking medical experience students need to work on the real thing.  I would not replace every experience in my 5th-grade classroom with a simulation.  Students need a variety of approaches.

3D printing and virtual reality have both emerged as vital technologies in the future of industrial innovation. If you need any proof of this, just take a look at what Lockheed Martin is doing with the both of them.

Earlier this week, the pioneering aerospace and defense company invited the press to their Collaborative Human Immersive Laboratory (CHIL) in Colorado. The visitors were treated to a remarkable surprise, a first-hand look at the 3D holographic platform used to design new engine systems.

Using a pair of 3D virtual reality glasses with integrated motion tracking, Lockheed Martin has created an immersive platform. The hologram is enclosed within an area referred to as The Cave, a part of the breakthrough technology that employees have developed within the CHIL.
