Over the past decade, millions of kids around the world have used Scratch to code their own interactive games, stories, animations, and more. This outpouring of creativity inspires us to continue to extend and improve Scratch, so that kids everywhere have new opportunities to express themselves creatively with new technologies.

Today, we’re launching Scratch 3.0, a new generation of Scratch that expands how, what, and where kids can create with code. As we’ve tested prototypes of Scratch 3.0, we’ve been amazed by the projects that kids have made — like a hedgehog that speaks French, a hippopotamus that dances to hip-hop, and a soccer game you control with your shoe.

Have you ever seen the code behind your favorite apps and programs you use each and everyday? If you’re like me, this code is exactly that—a code that I certainly cannot break. It feels as though I am trying to read another language; a language that has a few familiar pieces, yet as a whole looks like gibberish. While the code that is required for computer programming may be a language that is foreign to many of us, it is essential for the growing computer science field. One mission I have when teaching young children is helping them understand the different type of image files and discussions about file extensions.  The topics of .gif and .jpeg lead to great discussion about animated vs. non-animated images.  File extensions can help students think about different programs and what type of files are needed or created.   Understanding image resolution helps them create higher quality media that doesn’t contain pixelated images.
