  1. A hacker group is exploiting vulnerabilities in more than ten WordPress plugins to create rogue admin accounts on WordPress sites across the internet.

    The attacks are an escalation part of a hacking campaign that started last month. During previous attacks, the hackers exploited vulnerabilities in the same plugins to plant malicious code on the hacked sites. This code was meant to show popup ads or to redirect incoming visitors to other websites.

    However, two weeks ago, the group behind these attacks changed its tactics. Mikey Veenstra, a threat analyst with cybersecurity firm Defiant, told ZDNet today that starting with August 20, the hacker group modified the malicious code planted on hacked sites.

    Instead of just inserting pop-ups and redirects, the malicious code also ran a function in order to test if the site visitor had the ability to create user accounts on the site, a feature only available for WordPress admin accounts.

Depuis la fin du XIXème siècle, de nombreux de pédagogues ont avancé des propositions pour donner vie et force au désir d’apprendre. Alfred Binet, pédagogue et psychologue français, plus connu pour ses tests, écrivait par exemple en 1902 dans son livre « Les idées modernes sur les enfants » :

 : « Au lieu de lui expliquer des idées, il vaut mieux les lui faire trouver ; au lieu de lui donner des ordres, il vaut mieux lui laisser la spontanéité de ses actes, et n’intervenir que pour contrôler ». Il ajoutait plus loin : « Entrez dans une classe ; si vous voyez les élèves immobiles, écoutant sans peine un maître agité qui pérore dans sa chaire, ou encore vous voyez ces enfants, copier, écrire le cours que le maître leur dicte, dites-vous que c’est de la mauvaise pédagogie. J’aime mieux une classe où je verrais des enfants moins silencieux, plus bruyants mais occupés à faire le travail le plus modeste, pourvu que ce soit un travail où ils mettent un effort personnel, un travail qui est leur œuvre, qui exige un peu de réflexion, de jugement et de goût. »

Depuis la mise en place des écoles actives voici plus d’un siècle, l’activité justement et l’autonomie de l’élève, son plaisir de découvrir par lui-même, de se questionner et de chercher sont recommandés comme les meilleurs agents de la motivation. Les questions nourrissent la curiosité et entraînent la dynamique du « connaître ». Les attentes de l’enfant, ses projets jouent un rôle moteur, auquel contribuent fondamentalement la confiance dans ses compétence intellectuelles et l’estime de soi, que notre système scolaire met particulièrement à mal.

Education may be the passport to the future, but for all the good teaching out there, it would seem that schools are failing to impart some of the most important life skills, according to one educational expert.

Dr. Tony Wagner, co-director of Harvard's Change Leadership Group, argues that today’s school children are facing a “global achievement gap”, which is the gap between what even the best schools are teaching and the skills young people need to learn.

This has been exacerbated by two colliding trends: firstly, the global shift from an industrial economy to a knowledge economy, and secondly, the way in which today’s school children – brought up with the internet – are motivated to learn.

In his book The Global Achievement Gap, Wagner identifies seven core competencies every child needs in order to survive in the coming world of work.

1. Critical thinking and problem-solving

 

2. Collaboration across networks and leading by influence

 

3. Agility and adaptability

 

4. Initiative and entrepreneurialism

 

5. Effective oral and written communication

I never say that in criticism of teachers or of school principals or even of superintendents. That's something in the culture ─ at least, the political culture ─ of education. There is pressure on the system that gets in the way of what people most urgently need to do in schools to make them more humane and more personal places. There's really a lot more room for innovation in schools than people suspect. A lot of what goes on isn’t required by law; it's more a function of habit and tradition and routine than anything else.”

This habit of tradition and routine is exactly why education has remained woefully behind the times. In the business of education, we don’t have the usual market pressures that require innovation. Public education is a monopoly with no real competition to require forward movement.

This habit of tradition and routine is exactly why education has remained woefully behind the times. In the business of education, we don’t have the usual market pressures that require innovation. Public education is a monopoly with no real competition to require forward movement.

Michael Young was working one-on-one with a student when he heard a voice: "Maybe pause a little bit longer and wait for the student to respond."

It wasn't his internal monologue reminding him of something he learned in training. The voice belonged to an instructional coach 50 miles away, who was watching what Young was doing in the classroom through a livestream and communicating via an earpiece.

"It was really nice to feel supported and get direct feedback in the moment, because as much as you can do that through somebody being there and watching you, they always do it afterwards or by interrupting [the lesson]," said Young, who teaches special education at Elk Ridge Elementary School in Buckley, Wash. "It was helpful information that changed the way I taught."

The practice is called bug-in-ear coaching, and it has been around for decades in different sectors in some capacity. But in recent years, more and more educators are beginning to try it out.

According to the article, education now focusses more on information and data, followed by understanding and knowledge, and in last place, transfer of expertise. However, in the future, when artificial intelligence becomes common, education needs to focus on transfer of expertise before everything else. I feel that this is rather true. Knowledge of events and subjects might give you a boost in your career, but what is more important is the skills to learn, which is the transfer of expertise. Education needs to shift in order to meet this demand of skills needed in the future.

It can be evidenced that a lot of aspects of education continue being as traditional as always. Nevertheless, I must highlight that nowadays people are becoming aware about the importance of incorporating technology into the classrooms. Although people are becoming aware, taking advantage of technology to improve the learning process is still a challenge.

This article is really interesting due to the fact that it provides specific examples of skills needed in this century, and that can be achieved through the use of technological devices. Also, this article made me think about my role as a future teacher and the responsibility to start making little changes into the classrooms in order to improve education and contribute positive aspects to it. it is clear that the article makes a direct relationship about technology and education, and how to prepare students to deal with the 21st century skills.

There are many forces that are shaping the future of the internet today, from artificial intelligence (AI) and cyberthreats to the internet of things (IoT) and the rising role of government—all of which impact key areas, including digital divides, personal freedoms and rights, as well as media and society.

The internet Society (ISOC)’s 2017 Global internet Report found for example that AI and IoT, for all of their benefits to people’s personal and work lives, could result in a “surveillance society.” Therefore, ethical considerations should steer technology development and guide its use.

The survey also found wide-ranging fears that there are significant forces at work that may undermine the promise of the internet for future generations. For example, many believe that internet freedom will continue to decline around the world due to widespread surveillance, internet shutdowns and content regulation. At the same time, cybersecurity issues will pressure governments to take decisions that could erode the open and distributed global governance of the internet. Measures that may be intended to secure cyberspace may undermine personal rights and freedoms. Without a change of course, online freedoms may be nearing a point of irreversible decline, ISOC found.

It is almost universally acknowledged that in order to succeed in the 21st century, students must learn much more than the “three Rs” and basic computer competency.

 

The term “21st century skills” is used often in educational circles to refer to a range of abilities and competencies that go beyond what has traditionally been taught in the classroom, including problem solving, communication, collaboration, creativity and innovation. Others define the term as “information literacy, media literacy, and information, communication and technology literacy.”

 

More importantly, students need these skills because employers across a huge variety of industries increasingly demand them. A recent McKinsey report indicated that close to 40 percent of employers could not find people with the right skills while 60 percent “complain[ed] of a lack of preparation.” Even jobs that were once considered vocationalsuch as welding, petroleum production, and even factory work, are now high tech, and require specialized knowledge that includes not only a robust science background and familiarity with the computerized machinery that keeps heavy industry humming, but also critical thinking and collaboration skills. In other words, 21st century job growth is outpacing our ability to develop a prepared workforce, making it more critical than ever to teach these skills.

Teacher professional learning is of increasing interest as one way to support the increasingly complex skills students need to learn in preparation for further education and work in the 21st century. Sophisticated forms of teaching are needed to develop student competencies such as deep mastery of challenging content, critical thinking, complex problem-solving,

 

effective communication and collaboration, and self-direction. In turn, effective professional development (PD) is needed to help teachers learn and refine the pedagogies required to teach these skills. However, research has shown that many PD initiatives appear ineffective in supporting changes in teacher practices and student learning. Accordingly, we set out to discover the features of effective PD.

 

This paper reviews 35 methodologically rigorous studies that have demonstrated a positive link between teacher professional development, teaching practices, and student outcomes. We identify the features of these approaches and offer rich  descriptions of these models to inform those seeking to understand the nature of the initiatives.

By attempting to explain a concept in simple terms, you’ll quickly see where you have a good understanding of that concept. You’ll also be able to instantly pinpoint your problem areas, because they’ll be the areas where you either get stuck or where you end up resorting to using complex language and terminology. In addition to helping you pinpoint those problem areas in the concept you’re trying to learn, the Feynman Technique gives you a quick, efficient way to shore up those areas using targeted learning. It’s a simple technique, but it’ll help you study much more efficiently once you put into action. How to Use the Feynman Technique: Step 1: Grab a sheet of paper and write the name of the concept at the top. You can use pretty much any concept or idea – even though the technique is named after Feynman, it’s not limited solely to math and science. Step 2: Explain the concept in your own words as if you were teaching it to someone else. Focus on using plain, simple language. Don’t limit your explanation to a simple definition or a broad overview; challenge yourself to work through an example or two as well to ensure you can put the concept into action. Step 3: Review your explanation and identify the areas where you didn’t know something or where you feel your explanation is shaky. Once you’ve pinpointed them, go back to the source material, your notes, or any examples you can find in order to shore up your understanding. Step 4: If there are any areas in your explanation where you’ve used lots of technical terms or complex language, challenge yourself to re-write these sections in simpler terms. Make sure your explanation could be understood by someone without the knowledge base you believe you already have. Step 5: think like a child; while you’re working through the Feynman Technique for any given concept, it can be useful to pretend that you’re explaining that concept to a child. Doing this will boost your own understanding for one simple reason; a kid is probably going ask why? Why does that formula work? How can you know it`ll always work? While older people often become accustomed to taking things at face value, kids are naturally curious. They’re quick to point out their confusion. This is a great mindset to adopt.
