5 Ways to Make AWESOME Plans for a New Makerspace

5 Ways to Make AWESOME Plans for a New Makerspace | KILUVU | Scoop.it
For the first time in four years, I am without a makerspace.  My new school’s library is beautiful and huge and has a school culture that is just ripe for making.  Even though it was tempting, I decided not to change it up and create a makerspace over the summer.  I want to be sure that the library program, including a new makerspace, is responsive to the needs of the school and its culture.  Therefore, I plan on spending at least the first-semester making plans for how this space will work.  It will likely be very different from my previous space, but I’m excited to see what forms.

Making plans for a new makerspace can be daunting, so I’ve gathered together some tips to help get started:

Flybrix's drone kit lets you build and fly a custom drone using LEGO bricks - and it made for one of the best Tinder dates I've ever been on.

The Science Classroom Makerspace - Edutopia

The Science Classroom Makerspace - Edutopia | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Discussions of maker education often dazzle with stories of fanciful robots, exotic materials, and whimsical ideas for cross-disciplinary projects. These impressive examples showcase the amazing things creative people can do, but when I wanted to build making into my freshman biology course, I felt stymied. When I reframed making as integral rather than optional, I found a way to let students create.

4 Super Easy Budget Friendly Projects for Your Makerspace

4 Super Easy Budget Friendly Projects for Your Makerspace | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Yes – budget friendly and makerspace can happen in the same sentence.  A common misconception about makerspaces is that you have to spend a lot of money to give your students creative, hands-on learning.  But you can absolutely do a lot of makerspace projects with little to no money.  It might not be as easy as buying some fancy ready made kit, but it’s definitely rewarding.

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity

Why Making Is Essential to Learning | #LEARNingByDoing #Maker #MakerED #MakerSpaces #Creativity | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Research shows that hands-on learning is an effective way to teach students science. A 2009 study found that eighth-grade students who were involved in hands-on science projects demonstrated a deeper understanding of concepts than students who were taught with traditional methods such as textbook readings, lectures, and tests (Riskowski et al., 2009).

Why is hands-on learning effective? We can look to neuroscience for insight. Students who participate in science experiments, instead of just observing them, have a deeper conceptual understanding of science. Through brain imaging, researchers found that physical experience activates the sensorimotor region of students' brains, which helps reinforce what they're learning (Kontra et al., 2015).

If students use their hands as well as their minds, they're essentially learning twice.
