The Science Classroom Makerspace - Edutopia

The Science Classroom Makerspace - Edutopia | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Discussions of maker education often dazzle with stories of fanciful robots, exotic materials, and whimsical ideas for cross-disciplinary projects. These impressive examples showcase the amazing things creative people can do, but when I wanted to build making into my freshman biology course, I felt stymied. When I reframed making as integral rather than optional, I found a way to let students create.

Dit is een goed alternatief op de huidige recyclingmethodes voor batterijen, omdat er nu meer batterijen worden gebruikt dan vroeger, en die worden uiteindelijk weer gerecycled.

A Literacy-Based Strategy to Help Teachers Integrate Science Skills

A Literacy-Based Strategy to Help Teachers Integrate Science Skills | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Many elementary school teachers love to teach reading and writing, but are less comfortable with science and math. It’s not a hard and fast truth, of course, but learning to read is a big focus of the early school years, so it makes sense that teachers who gravitate toward elementary school like teaching literacy. But it’s also important to expose kids to science early and get them excited about the practices that define scientific inquiry. And literature may be the perfect starting point. Stories are full of tension, conflict and dilemmas that make wonderful departure points for engineering projects that weave subjects together.

How Are Scientists Using Social Media in the Workplace?

How Are Scientists Using Social Media in the Workplace? | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Social media has created networked communication channels that facilitate interactions and allow information to proliferate within professional academic communities as well as in informal social circumstances. A significant contemporary discussion in the field of science communication is how scientists are using (or might use) social media to communicate their research. This includes the role of social media in facilitating the exchange of knowledge internally within and among scientific communities, as well as externally for outreach to engage the public. This study investigates how a surveyed sample of 587 scientists from a variety of academic disciplines, but predominantly the academic life sciences, use social media to communicate internally and externally. Our results demonstrate that while social media usage has yet to be widely adopted, scientists in a variety of disciplines use these platforms to exchange scientific knowledge, generally via either Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, or blogs. Despite the low frequency of use, our work evidences that scientists perceive numerous potential advantages to using social media in the workplace. Our data provides a baseline from which to assess future trends in social media use within the science academy.

Round of AI movements across the American industry.

Richard Platt's curator insight, July 11, 2018 6:39 PM

First was big data, and then came cloud, then the machine learning frenzy. We reached peak machine learning in 2017.

Last year investors pumped in over $15.2B in funding to AI startups across multiple industries. It was a 141% spike in funding from 2016.  Over 1,100 new AI companies have raised their first rounds of funding since 2016. And that’s more than half the historic number of AI startups that have ever raised an equity round. The normalization and mainstreaming of machine learning will make investors picky about the AI companies they fund.

How to focus students’ engineering design projects on science learning : StemTeachingTools

How to focus students’ engineering design projects on science learning : StemTeachingTools | KILUVU | Scoop.it
Science and engineering share many of the same practices, however, they are fundamentally different fields with different pursuits and processes. Scientists typically seek multiple strands of evidence to support or refute claims about the natural world, while engineers use an iterative problem solving process to meet specific, often human-related, needs. Tensions between these two fields can make it difficult to integrate engineering into the science classroom, but simple strategies can help teachers use engineering design as an inclusive way to teach science concepts.
