One of the most intense experiences you’ll ever have is visiting a country that speaks a language different than yours. There’s a host of tools you can use, but Google’s Translate product has leapfrogged just about everything out there over the years. Its most handy, and impressive, tool is the six-month-old instant translation feature, using the goodies from the acquired Word Lens, that lets you point your camera at something written in another language, say a sign, and it’ll translate into your language with ridiculous accuracy in almost real-time.

Google, Microsoft, Mozilla and the engineers on the WebKit project today announced that they have teamed up to launch WebAssembly, a new binary format for compiling applications for the web. The web thrives on standards and, for better or worse, JavaScript is its programming language. Over the years, however, we’ve seen more and more efforts that allow developers to work around some of the limitations of JavaScript by building compilers that transpile code in other languages to JavaScript. Some of these projects focus on adding new features to the language (like Microsoft’s TypeScript) or speeding up JavaScript (like Mozilla’s asm.jsproject). Now, many of these projects are starting to come together in the form of WebAssmbly.

(From the article): A Google+ Collection can contain any type of media, from pictures and videos to website urls. If you have training videos you would like to share with your company simply put them in a Collection and title it “Company Training videos” then share the url. Outside of the office this can be a great way to label and share photo albums from family vacations. Watch this video on how to make a Collection of your own and share it with the world.

This is interesting because it shows how far the concept of 'Curation' has come in the last 10 years. I don't remember much about it but I remember that in the early days of Blogger, perhaps even before Google bought it, they had a tool or bookmarklet or some little button that had certain curation abilities. My first blog was on Blogger and I remember using that tool. Later, I maintained a Posterous blog for a couple of years...maybe more. I liked Posterous a lot and was very sad when they sold it (Posterous) to Yahoo and then about a year later those jerks at Yahoo closed it down. I thought Posterous was a very nice blog with just the right amount of features to get the job done without getting too technical.

Google has just introduced "Collections", for Google+, a new service which allows any Google+ user to group his posts by topic and to create public, shareable collections of his favorite links, articles, videos and images. To use Google Collections, simply go to your G+ profile page and then select "Collections" on the drop down menu appearing on the top left part of the page. "Each collection can be shared publicly, privately, or with a custom set of people. Once you create your first collection, your profile will display a new tab where other people can find and follow your collections." You can either create new posts containing whatever type of content inside a collection, or assign an existing, published post to a collection you have just created. You can create as many collections as you like. Google+ Collections is available on the web and on Android (iOS coming later). My comment: Google+ Collections adds opportunity for creating additional value to G+ users by letting interests drive community engagement. This is a feature that sooner or later any social network will offer. Free to use. (From the article): There are other options from Google that might help your company from within. Google Apps provides employees with Gmail, online calendars, shared documents and more starting at $50 a year per user. These integrate well with some of Google’s other products – particularly AdWords and Analytics – so it might be worth considering. Even if you don’t opt for it, the above tools will help bring your company’s profile to where you want it to be.

How can we better leverage these options in learning? How do we leverage these to show best practices, quick bites of information for a particular group or use it in the classroom for application learning through video and discussion of that video. Interesting. Anyone doing it?

Google has been working for some time to an open source compressor for high quality video and at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas (Jan 7-10 2014) will present the new format VP9, which offers 4k video compatibility and optimization for Internet bandwidth consumption, ensuring a great flow with a band from 7mb.
VP9 is characterized by being free and open source and by its strategic alliances with leading hardware and software manufacturers including LG, Sony, Intel, Samsung, NVidia etc.. The further thing, not least, to imagine that VP9 might become the new standard format is that YouTube, of course, will adopt this format, and just at the CES will demonstrate streaming video using the new VP9. .............. the study looked at computers visiting Google sites from June to October of 2014, replaying network requests to see if bogus ads were being injected locally. Over those five months, the system detected 5,339,913 different IP addresses infected with adware, roughly 5.5 percent the total requests.

And so we moved from #wearable to #insertable. Google launches contact lens device to help those with diabetes to control the level of glucose in the blood. This opens a new horizon for sensors managed via wireless. Thinking about many releases of new technological gadgets (like UP by Jawbone) #Health and well being are always on the cutting edge in technology.

People who use Google are given the impression that they are interacting with the data out there, but they are actually interacting with Google and its view of the world.
"They are prediction engines that constantly refine a theory about who you are and what you are going to do or want next. Together, they create an universe of data for each one of us." Or in other words, is our acceptance of what we see in search results eroding our ability (or willingness) to consider alternatives and employ critical thinking?
