The New Reputation Economy - What You Need to Know

The New Reputation Economy - What You Need to Know | Learning, Teaching & Leading Today | Scoop.it

This article was written by Rachel Botsman for WiredUK. I posted her Ted Talk the other day on this relevant, evolving topic., the reputation economy.

Rachel goes deeper into this with great insights, information and takeaways that are important for all of us professionally and personally.

Intro:

"Imagine a world where banks take into account your online reputation alongside traditional credit ratings to determine your loan;

**where headhunters hire you based on the expertise you've demonstrated on online forums such as Quora;

**where your status from renting a house through Airbnb helps you become a trusted car renter on WhipCar

**where your feedback on eBay can be used to get a head-start selling on Etsy

1` egfb

**where traditional business cards are replaced by profiles of your digital trustworthiness, updated in real-time.

Where reputation data becomes the window into how we behave, what motivates us, how our peers view us and ultimately whether we can or can't be trusted.

Welcome to the reputation economy, where your online history becomes more powerful than your credit history.

An aggregated online reputation having a real-world value holds enormous potential for sectors where trust is fractured:

**banking; e-commerce, where value is exponentially increased by knowing who someone really is

**peer-to-peer marketplaces, where a high degree of trust is required between strangers;

**where a traditional approach based on disjointed information sources is currently inefficient, such as recruiting. .

Early influence and reputation aggregators will undoubtedly learn by trial and error -- but they will also face the significant challenge of pioneering the use of reputation data in a responsible way.

There's a challenge beyond that: reputation is largely contextual, so it's tricky to transport it to other situations.

.

It's the culmination of many layers of reputation you build in different places that genuinely reflect who you are as a person and figuring out exactly how that carries value in a variety of contexts.

The most basic level is verification The larger opportunity is carrying social matches based on like-minded individuals across marketplaces.

Kids as Game Designers: Fostering Creativity and Thoughtfulness with Online Learning | Learning, Teaching & Leading Today | Scoop.it
Much of what we hear when people talk about games for learning may be behind the potential of video games to teach traditional content, but there's also a very exciting, and increasingly popular trend in education of kids as game designers.

Powerful suggestions for educators the implement game based learning into their classrooms. One suggestion encourages teachers to play games themselves to better understand gaming culture and to have personal knowledge of what they would be using in their classrooms. Advocacy is also strongly encouraged.

11 Reasons Teachers Should Make Their Own Videos

11 Reasons Teachers Should Make Their Own Videos | Learning, Teaching & Leading Today | Scoop.it

Any company, organization, or individual hoping to take advantage of digital video to educate or entertain the populace or promote a product should have a video strategy in place before springing for the time and equipment involved. Educators, of course, are not exempt from the core tenets of solidifying a viable video strategy — especially when it comes to how exactly they plan to take advantage of everything the medium offers.

No, algebra isn’t necessary — and yes, STEM is overrated

"Whenever I meet anyone who wants to talk about education, I immediately ask them to tell me the quadratic equation. Almost no one ever can. (Even the former chairman of the College Board doesn’t know it). Yet, we all seem to believe that everyone must learn algebra.

Why this religious zeal over algebra? It helps students learn how to think, people claim. Really? Are mathematicians the best thinkers you know? I know plenty of them who can’t handle their own lives very well.
Reasoning mathematically is a nice skill but one that is not relevant to most of life. We reason about many things: parenting, marriage, careers, finances, business, politics. Do we learn how to reason about these things by learning algebra? The idea is absurd."

Planet Records Fourth-Warmest July on Record

Planet Records Fourth-Warmest July on Record | Learning, Teaching & Leading Today | Scoop.it
"July was the fourth-warmest such month on record globally, and the 329th consecutive month with a global-average surface temperature above the 20th-century average, according to an analysis released Wednesday by the National Climatic Data Center (NCDC).

The combined-average July temperature over global land and ocean surfaces was 61.52°F, which was 1.12°F above the 20th-century average. This was the 36th straight July with a global temperature above the 20th-century average.

The last time the globe experienced a cooler-than-average July occurred in 1976, when Gerald Ford was the U.S. president.

The globally averaged temperature over land areas was the third highest for July on record. For Northern Hemisphere land areas only, however, it was the warmest July on record, which is significant since this is where most of the planet’s land masses are located."

33 Digital Skills Every 21st Century Teacher should Have

33 Digital Skills Every 21st Century Teacher should Have | Learning, Teaching & Leading Today | Scoop.it
"Every single teacher is concerned about his/ her teaching practices and the skills involved in this process. How many times have you wondered about a better way to teach the same lesson you have delivered to an eariler class? How often have you used technology to engage your students and improve their learning ? These are some recurring questions we keep regurgitating each time our teaching skills are put to the test."

"There is no blinking the fact  that the type of students we teach today are completely different from last century's. We , definitely, need to look at some of the skills we, as teachers, need to equip ourselves with to better live up to the challenge. Among all the challenges we would have in education, there is not as daunting a challenge as catching students focus and getting them engaged in the learning process. For this particular reason, and in addition to the skills I initially mentioned in 21st Century Teaching Skills article, I would like to provide you  with another list of  some equally important digital skills that you, as a teacher, need to seriously consider if you want to pave the way for the 21st century teaching. I have added a list of web tools under each skill for teachers to better exploit it.

Please, remember that I have spent many laborious hours working on  this post and all I ask is a credit back to Educational Technology and Mobile Learning when re-using this content somewhere else."
