OPINION | In a cynical society, otherworldly performances such as Usain Bolt’s can’t be fully celebrated.

Usain Bolt has never been tested positive for using drug enhancing drugs. Is it then fair that we treat his performances with skepticism?  Innocent until proven guilty or guilty until proven innocent?

Saudi Arabia judoka Wojdan Shaherkani will compete at the Olympics after a row over the wearing of a hijab is resolved.

On the one hand the fact that this woman could participate is cool. On the other hand, why should this flexibility in interpreting the rules come from Judo and not from Religion? Is there a universal rule stating that religion CANNOT be flexible? What do you think?

Muslim athletes balance sport and religion

Muslim athletes balance sport and religion | London Olympics 2012 controversies | Scoop.it

With the London Games coinciding with the holy month of Ramadan, Muslim athletes are split between the desire to respect a pillar of their religion and maintaining the best possible physical condition to compete at the Olympics. Some Muslim countries are allowing athletes to find their own rhythm with regard to Ramadan, where others remain strict on respecting rules.

Out of thin air | Prospect Magazine

Out of thin air | Prospect Magazine | London Olympics 2012 controversies | Scoop.it

Sport is suppose to be pure competition between human being, based on the individual merits and talents of men and women. That is why we have referees and rules : As a rule of nature, in sport we are not all equal.

That is also why the debate around performance enhancing drugs and technological and scientific advancements in this domain are so controversial:  technology and sport go hand in hand yet they hinder sport as a competition.  Using performance enhancing technology surely means that everybody and anybody could win? Most probably he or she with the most money and/or sponsorship!

Where should we draw the line, and can we draw the line in the face of ever-advancing technology an innovation?

This article suggests that its up to sportsmen and sportswomen as well as spectators to know when to say stop.
