Nanosponges used to soak up toxins in the bloodstream

Nanosponges used to soak up toxins in the bloodstream | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Developed by scientists at the University of California, San Diego, these tiny sponges mimic red blood cells, and are able to soak up lethal toxins – including snake venom and bacteria – from the bloodstream.

The nanosponges are made up of a biocompatible polymer core, which is coated with segments of the host’s red blood cell membranes. That coating fools the immune system into identifying the sponges as the body’s own blood cells, so it doesn’t attack them. Because each nanosponge is 3,000 times smaller than a red blood cell, the harvested membrane of one cell provides enough material to coat thousands of sponges.

Are Your Organics Truly Organic?

Are Your Organics Truly Organic? | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Do you buy organic? Ever been curious whether you are getting what you pay for? Unfortunately, sometimes you aren't getting exactly what you think...

“Grated organic cheese, for example, contains wood starch to prevent clumping. Organic beer can be made from non-organic hops. Organic mock duck contains a synthetic ingredient that gives it an authentic, stringy texture.”

"Three years ago, U.S. Department of Agriculture employees determined that synthetic additives in organic baby formula violated federal standards and should be banned from a product carrying the federal organic label."

Ozone levels linked to cardiac arrest

Ozone levels linked to cardiac arrest | Longevity science | Scoop.it

Cardiac arrests are more likely when levels of air pollution - especially soot-like particles and ozone - have been high in recent days or even hours, according to a large study from Texas.

Evidence already links airborne particles with heart disease and lung problems but the new findings are the first to show that high ozone may immediately raise the risk that a person's heart will stop beating.

Pesticide chemical linked to food allergies (study); Chemical also used to chlorinate tap water

Pesticide chemical linked to food allergies (study); Chemical also used to chlorinate tap water | Longevity science | Scoop.it

ScienceDaily (Dec. 3, 2012) — Food allergies are on the rise, affecting 15 million Americans. And according to a new study published in the December issue of Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology, the scientific journal of the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology (ACAAI), dichlorophenol-containing pesticides could be partially to blame.

The study reported that high levels of dichlorophenols, a chemical used in pesticides and to chlorinate water, when found in the human body, are associated with food allergies.

Plastic in Your Food… and in Your Body

Plastic in Your Food… and in Your Body | Longevity science | Scoop.it

A study found that a family who stopped eating foods that had been in contact with plastic experienced huge reductions in body levels of plastic toxins in just three days.

“Plastic food packaging is a major source of these potentially harmful chemicals, which most Americans harbor in their bodies. Other studies have shown phthalates (pronounced THAL-ates) passing into food from processing equipment and food-prep gloves, gaskets and seals on non-plastic containers, inks used on labels — which can permeate packaging — and even the plastic film used in agriculture.”

Are you consuming Teflon, BPA, fire retardants and other chemicals? Advocates in the field are concerned…
