A new digital magazine that aims to take a more analytic, in-depth and participatory approach to investigative journalism in Luxembourg has raised more than €150,000 in crowdfunding ahead of its launch in March 2018.

Journalists Christoph Bumb and Laurence Bervard, who previously worked for daily newspaper Luxemburger Wort, founded Reporter because they thought there was a need for a new type of media in Luxembourg: digital-only, independent, supported solely by readers, and involving the audience in the reporting process.

Bumb and Bervard set up a crowdfunding campaign for Reporter on 15 November to raise the amount needed to get started with hiring a small editorial team and developing a platform that would support reader participation.

Their goal was to have 1,000 supporters contributing a minimum of €150 each until 20 December, which covers the cost of a basic annual subscription to the magazine and allows them to read and comment on all stories published on the website, although people can also pledge a smaller amount without becoming subscribers.

Those pledging €300 or more receive additional access to a regular virtual editorial conference and free participation in events Reporter will host, such as roundtable discussions and workshops, as well as longer term subscriptions depending on the amount they contribute.

The money was raised less than two weeks later, on 28 November, and so far, 773 people have pledged €163,035 to support the new editorial initiative. The team has increased the goal to €200,000, with additional contributions going into development and expanding the editorial network of full-time staff and freelancers.

"It's less about the monopolisation of media ownership – that's a problem too – but [political independence] is one of the main reasons why people are contributing to the campaign."

Le nouveau magazine en ligne «Reporter» a réussi sa récolte de fonds et franchi ce mardi la barre des 150.000 euros nécessaires pour lancer son projet.

Les journalistes Laurence Bervard et Christoph Bumb ont réussi leur pari: ils ont récolté plus de 150.000 euros - promis par 700 supporters - et ainsi atteint la somme qu’ils jugeaient nécessaire pour pouvoir lancer leur projet. Et ce en moins de 14 jours, soit 22 jours avant la deadline qu’ils s’étaient fixée.

«‘Reporter’ devient réalité», se réjouissait Christoph Bumb sur Twitter et par mail aux supporters. Et d’ajouter que «la première étape est franchie», mais que le crowdfunding se poursuit, étant donné que «chaque euro supplémentaire, chaque abonné de plus comptent et feront avancer ‘Reporter’».

Unabhängig aber auch von jeder Form der Werbung. Die Leser sind demnach durch ihre Abos die einzige Einkommensquelle.

Reporter announced on Facebook on Wednesday that it had passed its €150,000 target with €150,190 raised since founders launched the Kickstarter campaign on 15 November.

The campaign is expected to last a total of five weeks and people can still donate. In exchange, investors receive a subscription, the length of which depends on the amount donated.

Reporter was founded by former Luxemburger Wort journalists Christophe Bumb and Laurence Bervard.

In recent weeks, their numbers were strengthened with the announcement they will be joined by former Wort culture editor Marie-Laure Rolland and 100,7 radio journalist Kyra Fischbach, who will work freelance on the project.

The online magazine is expected to launch in March 2018.

L’extension du domaine de la lutte – en matière médiatique – est en marche : ce lundi matin Christophe Bumb et Laurence Bervard, ex-journalistes du Wort, ont présenté leur bébé « reporter.lu » et donné quelques noms de futurs collaborateurs.

« Les médias luxembourgeois sont dans une phase de rupture sans précédent. Le modèle de business de la presse écrite subventionnée est mis en question. Ce qui a aussi un impact sur la façon de consommer du public : il s’attend à plus d’informations, gratuites et mieux recherchées. S’y ajoute la question de l’indépendance des médias : l’influence de la politique sur différentes composantes de la presse est devenue plus importante ces derniers temps – et je ne parle pas uniquement du Luxemburger Wort » expliquait Christophe Bumb lors de la conférence de presse qui a eu lieu dans l’ambiance cosy et hip de la Bouneweeger Stuff – par un soleil radieux.

L’indépendance est un atout pour Bumb : 100 pour cent des parts appartiennent aux fondateurs (Bumb et Bervard). Reporter.lu se veut un média citoyen : « Il n’y a pas de fonds cachés, pas de parti ou de syndicat derrière », soutient le fondateur, qui n’exclut pourtant pas de demander l’aide à la presse en ligne, promue par un règlement ministériel issue du bureau de Xavier Bettel. Même si selon les fondateurs, leur modèle de fonctionnement n’est pas axé sur l’obtention de cette aide : « Elle n’est qu’un régime transitoire et donc nous ne la visons pas depuis le début. Mais si nous réussissons à remplir les conditions pour l’obtenir, nous le ferons bien sûr ».

Le nouveau magazine en ligne «Reporter» mènera sa campagne de financement pendant cinq semaines à compter du 15 novembre, annonçaient les fondateurs ce lundi.

Christoph Bumb et Laurence Bervard présentaient ce lundi un business model «sérieux» pour le magazine en ligne Reporter qui se veut «indépendant, critique, d’investigation et participatif». Selon les deux anciens journalistes du Wort, Reporter a «besoin de 150.000 euros pour pouvoir démarrer. Pour cela nous avons besoin de 1.000 supporters qui seraient prêts à investir 150 euros». Qui paiera les 150 € aura automatiquement un abonnement d'un an.

A former Luxemburger Wort journalist is to co-found a multilingual online investigative journalism media, expected to go live in the coming weeks.

Christoph Bumb, who was a political journalist with the national newspaper for over five years, announced the digital magazine project during a radio discussion broadcast by 100,7 on Sunday 1 October.

“It will focus on critical, in-depth, investigative journalism,” Bumb told Delano on Monday, adding: “We will step back and focus on the bigger stories and not just deliver the same news that many media outlets do.”

The journalist further explained the project would be developed in the early stages by three journalists, a team that could rise to five within the first 12 months. The investigations and in-depth articles would initially be published in German; however Bumb said the goal will be to publish in languages which people understand in Luxembourg. “It will mostly be German and French but I wouldn’t exclude articles on specific topics that will be treated in English,” he explained.
