I really like the transmedia storytelling idea, but simultaneous transmedia? i'm not so sure...what happens to the unfiltered narration experience? i'm more for the before and after. unless films are actually written with transmedia in mind. simply transmedia-ing existing films won't work. at least not for the core story.

Text During a Movie! Here's the First Trailer for 'APP,' a Film That Wants You to Keep Your Phone ON

Henrik Safegaard - Cloneartist's insight:

Usually moviegoers are instructed to turn off their smartphones while watching a film, but with "App," the new Dutch thriller directed by Bobby Boermans, viewers are encouraged to keep their phones on in order to experience the second-screen content.

As the first film made with the intentional inclusion of content on a second, mobile screen, "App" relies on an app, IRIS, which is equipped with sonic technology that triggers additional content during the movie.

Though it's not required for viewing the movie, using the second screen adds layers to the big-screen narrative.

The audience will be advised to leave their devices on their laps while watching the film. When there is additional content available on the second screen, their devices will vibrate.

The story behind DIAL: How Netflix and YouTube want to take on AirPlay

The story behind DIAL: How Netflix and YouTube want to take on AirPlay | Machinimania | Scoop.it

Netflix and YouTube have teamed up to launch DIAL, a protocol that helps developers of second-screen apps to discover and launch applications on smart TVs and connected devices. The effort is already getting support from a number of notable players, including Samsung, Sony, Hulu and the BBC. DIAL could become a key piece in efforts to establish an open alternative to Apple’s AirPlay.

YouTube and Netflix have been collaborating quietly on these efforts for months. Word first got out when some inquisitive users discovered traces of DIAL back in December. The DIAL website publicly launched with little fanfare and a brief mention on Engadget earlier this month, and now, Netflix is for the first time sharing some key details of the project with GigaOM.

DIAL stands for “discovery and launch,” which pretty much sums up what the protocol is meant to do. DIAL-enabled second screen apps will be able to discover DIAL-ready first-screen devices in the same network and launch apps on them. That may sound trivial, but it’s actually solving a big problem for second screen app developers.

Allegra Tepper: 'NBC Publishing hopes that the ebook won’t just provide a supplement to the show, but will create an “entirely new ‘second-screen’ experience.” The company hopes to pave the way for television interactivity, and “bridge the gap between fan and screen.”'

Making great TV even better: The BBC's approach to companion experiences

Making great TV even better: The BBC's approach to companion experiences | Machinimania | Scoop.it
Our editorial approach to companion experiences is three fold:

• Build on existing audience needs and behaviour

• Go beyond broadcast

• Drive creative renewal and innovation

We want to immerse our audience in the programme they're watching even more by building on the existing needs and behaviours the show inspires. We've learned a lot about this from years of programme-related experimentation on BBC Red Button and BBC Online.
