Proof, if it were needed, that turkeys don't vote for Christmas, with the boss of HS2 arguing that there's a clear business case for the Northern extension, and providing some figures to substantiate that case.

However, it's a sizeable opportunity cost - and you'd be surprised to learn that investment projects tend to overstate benefits and understate costs. One wonders why that might be?
