How has the pandemic affected living standards?

This video looks at how household living standards have changed over the course of the pandemic.

The IFS has looked into the impact of the pandemic on living standards, with a focus on deprivation. 

 

Interestingly, despite the loss of income in the recent past, there's little evidence of a significant uptick in deprivation but some groups, notably the self-employed, who have received lower levels of state support.

 

Similarly, there's also an ethnic dimension to this - with Pakstani and Bangladeshi families also seeing a rise in deprivation.

And here's a stark reminder of how poverty affects people, and why inequality is so iniquitous. There's been a significant drop in life expectancy in the poorest parts of Greater Manchester, making the strongest possible case for levelling up.
