I'm not sure why the accompanying photo for this story features Liz Truss, whose grasp of trade issues, even as the Minister responsible, seems tenuous at best. However, the government is intent on providing regional trade hubs to help boost exports.
It's an interesting conceit, but as Justin Urquhart-Stewart notes might well be wrong-headed. The hubs are designed to provide export advice to firms wanting to access fast-growing markets, but as he points out are there many exporters in the four centres chosen and I would also wonder whether large multinational car makers really require export advice from the government.
I'm going to go further than him in my criticism of this scheme: it's window-dressing at best. The best way to boost exports would be...
