Food poverty: 'I miss meals so my children can eat' - BBC Newsnight

Data shared with Newsnight exclusively by the Food Foundation suggests more than a quarter of households with children experienced food poverty last month - meaning they reduced what they ate, or skipped meals altogether. The charity says as the cost of living bites it has detected an alarming rise in cases.

Upon seeing the findings the former Children's Commissioner told us the scale of deprivation is now a national emergency. A government spokesperson says its priority is always to support the most vulnerable and millions of households have been offered help with rising bills.

Graham Watson's insight:

This Newsnight clip looks at the extent to which the cost of living crisis has generated significant pockets of poverty, with people missing meals in order to feed their children and experiencing food poverty as a result.

This is what poverty looks like. Is it appropriate for the world's sixth largest economy.

A report calls on the government to create a food security minister to protect the vulnerable.
Graham Watson's insight:

Should the pandemic have changed attitudes to food poverty? Certainly that's what the Commons Environment, Food and Rural Affairs Committee think arguing that gains that have been made during the pandemic should be sustained, with the creation of a food security mininster.

The problem is poverty, however we label it | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian

The problem is poverty, however we label it | Aditya Chakrabortty | Opinion | The Guardian | Macroeconomics: UK economy, IB Economics | Scoop.it
The prefixes ‘food’, ‘child’ or ‘fuel’ make life for 14 million poor Britons seem easily fixable. In truth, radical action is needed, says Guardian columnist Aditya Chakrabortty
Graham Watson's insight:

This is a really insightful piece that highlights the multi-dimensional aspects of poverty in the UK. Aditya Chakrabortty isolates a number of factors: food, fuel, child, clothing, transport and digital, among others.

And he's right: poverty is not just about a lack of income, it's fundamentally about a lack of opportunity and it's about social exclusion as a result of the intersection of various factors, and instead of paying it lip-service, the article argues that we need to be serious in tackling it.
