Post-Brexit import checks on food delayed again

Post-Brexit import checks on food delayed again | Macroeconomics: UK economy, IB Economics | Scoop.it
Concerns over impact on prices has led to another delay on checks for food coming in from the EU.
Graham Watson's insight:

Here we go again - the proposed post-Brexit import checks have been delayed again. After serial delays, the proposed introduction date of October 2023 has been pushed back again until January 2024. It's almost as if those who conceptualised of Brexit had no idea what they were doing, or what Brexit implies.

And, equally, you'd never think that these checks are going to increase the price of imported goods would you?

New customs checks will make imports more expensive and slower, says Cold Chain Federation
Graham Watson's insight:

More of the same. Cost of Brexit. Self-evident, but largely ignored in 2016.

And where's that £350m extra per week for the NHS.

Hauliers say Cabinet Office minister ignored their warnings, amid fears that worse is to come with introduction of import checks in July
Graham Watson's insight:

The Guardian has taken particular delight in the news that since Brexit, exports to the EU have fallen by 68%. Teething problems, no doubt.

This, and the prospects of even tougher restrictions on imports as of July, seem likely to have an adverse effect on growth going forward, and impede the coronavirus recovery.

It would be funny if it wasn't all so predictable...

Firms in Kent uncertain as government’s strategy for checks from this autumn remains unclear
Graham Watson's insight:

This Guardian article looks at the introduction of Brexit import controls later this year, and the cost of this, both in terms of the supply chain and for the final consumer.

One for the costs of Brexit file, methinks.

Time to stockpile olives? Shortages as delis are hit by new Brexit import rules | Brexit | The Guardian

Time to stockpile olives? Shortages as delis are hit by new Brexit import rules | Brexit | The Guardian | Macroeconomics: UK economy, IB Economics | Scoop.it
Regulations likely to result in higher prices and empty shelves for delis and others
Graham Watson's insight:

One for the costs of Brexit file - with the introduction of new Brexit import rules, and concerns that small suppliers, typically delicatessens, likely to be unable to import as easily as they have previously.

Expect some gaps on shelves - if you haven't already spotted them - I'm well aware that they've already existed for a couple of years. My current favourite - supermarket own-brand deodorant - presumably because of high CO2 prices...
