Fukushima - A Global Threat That Requires a Global Response | Truthout.org

Fukushima - A Global Threat That Requires a Global Response | Truthout.org | Ecologie & société | Scoop.it

The story of Fukushima should be on the front pages of every newspaper. Instead, it is rarely mentioned. The problems at Fukushima are unprecedented in human experience and involve a high risk of radiation events larger than any that the global community has ever experienced. It is going to take the best engineering minds in the world to solve these problems and to diminish their global impact.

When we researched the realities of Fukushima in preparation for this article, words like apocalyptic, cataclysmic and Earth-threatening came to mind. But, when we say such things, people react as if we were the little red hen screaming "the sky is falling" and the reports are ignored. So, we’re going to present what is known in this article and you can decide whether we are facing a potentially cataclysmic event.

Either way, it is clear that the problems at Fukushima demand that the world’s best nuclear engineers and other experts advise and assist in the efforts to solve them. Nuclear engineer Arnie Gundersen of Fairewinds.org and an international team of scientists created a 15-point plan to address the crises at Fukushima.

A subcommittee of the Green Shadow Cabinet (of which we are members), which includes long-time nuclear activist Harvey Wasserman, is circulating a sign-on letter and a petition calling on the United Nations and Japanese government to put in place the Gundersen et al plan and to provide 24-hour media access to information about the crises at Fukushima. There is also a call for international days of action on the weekend of November 9 and 10. The letter and petitions will be delivered to the UN on November 11 which is both Armistice Day and the 32nd month anniversary of the earthquake and tsunami that caused the Fukushima nuclear disaster.

TEPCO discloses extent of Fukushima radiation leak | Japan Daily News

TEPCO discloses extent of Fukushima radiation leak | Japan Daily News | Ecologie & société | Scoop.it

Tokyo Electric Power Co. (TEPCO), the utility company that operates the disaster-stricken Fukushima nuclear power facility, has on Sunday released estimate figures on how much radiation-contaminated water has leaked out of its facility, the first such data the company has released to the public since the March 2011 earthquake and tsunami caused a multiple reactor meltdown at the facility. TEPCO estimates the total amount of radioactive water leaked into the Pacific Ocean since May 2011 to be between 20 trillion to 40 trillion becquerels.

Last month, the embattled operator confirmed the suspicions of ocean contamination held by the public and Japan’s Nuclear Regulation Authority (NRA). The NRA had earlier said that it doubted TEPCO’s continued claims at that time that the toxic water was contained safely in the facility. Of these current numbers, TEPCO said that the scale of the radioactive leak from May 2011 to July 2013 was still around the allowed level under safety regulations before the accident, which was set at 22 trillion becquerels annually. TEPCO said that it would also be estimating the amount of strontium – another byproduct of the decommissioning process which is unfortunately cancer-causing – that may have also leaked out over the years.

Tokyo Electric Power Co. has leaked between 20 trillion to 40 trillion becquerels of radiation contaminated water into the pacific ocean since the 2011 disaster. To put this into perspective, that's between 800,000 to 1,000,000 Liters of contaminated water in our ocean.

"Turner Radio Network (TRN) has issued a report regarding Fukushima Diachi Nuclear Plant that is expected to affect the entire Northern Hemisphere."

"According to the report: “Persons residing on the west coast of North America should IMMEDIATELY begin preparing for another possible onslaught of dangerous atmospheric radiation from the Fukushima nuclear disaster site in Japan.”

TEPCO has confirmed that via camera surveillance, that steam has begun to pour from Reactor 3, although they have “not been identified abnormal plant conditions.”

Fukushima: 225 m3 of contaminated rain water leaked / Possibly absorbed by the ground already | Ecologie & société | Scoop.it

"225 m3 of highly contaminated rainwater leaked and possibly sank underground in other 2 tank areas.

According to Tepco, they found the water level of retained “rainwater” dropped from 12cm to 5cm, and from 12cm to 1cm in 2 tank areas from 12/20 to 12/24/2013.

Because the leaked water wasn’t found around those tank areas, Tepco assumes it was absorbed by the ground. Nobody noticed the water level was dropping for 3 days until 12/24/2013..."
