How to Recognize Snake Oil in Your Personal Learning Network

How to Recognize Snake Oil in Your Personal Learning Network | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

We’re all selling ourselves. Every one of us. This isn’t a bad thing; it’s just something we need to be aware of in the context of personal learning networks.

When people are strategic about building and leveraging their personal learning networks, they are also (or at least, they should be) very conscious about managing their personal brand. Your personal persona, especially online, and the image you portray are what makes you attractive to connect with. The “selling process” of personal learning networks is the efforts individuals take to not only connect with others, but to create an image around themselves so that others will want to connect with them.

#HR #RRHH Why build a Personal Learning Network?

#HR #RRHH Why build a Personal Learning Network? | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

How ever you approach your Personal Learning Network (PLN) you must keep the key principle in mind; it needs to be Personal.

The way you choose to build your PLN, the connections you make, the ideas you explore, the resources you share need to be relevant to you and should connect with your interests, expertise, passion and learning goals. If you are not finding value in your PLN, change it.

Nigel Coutts writes about the value of a personal learning network as a teacher. I in particular like his thinking about Twitter as a fast moving stream. Valuable lessons for anyone even if you're not a teacher.

Because A PLN Is a Gift…

Because A PLN Is a Gift… | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Yes, I talk about Twitter all the time.  I rave about the people I’ve met. I am addicted to edcamps.  I stalk the blogs of people who inspire me.  I read, save, download, bookmark, and retweet what makes me a better educator.  What is it all about? The people who are a part of my PLN, or personal learning network.  I often say the “P” in PLN stands for “Positive.”  One tweet can change your entire perspective, push your thinking, solidify your thoughts, or make you question something you didn’t even realize you needed to question.  For that? I am incredibly grateful.  The PLN is a gift that keeps on giving. It encourages you to give back just as much. It inspires you to do more, be more, and to never stop learning. So, to every person in the world who has become part of mine, I just wish to say “Thank you!”

Love this description of why a PLN and Twitter are essential to an educator.
