Learning doesn't have to be a "loner" experience.

Russian psychologist Lev Vygotsky suggested that knowledge is constructed through our interactions with others.
MOOCs (Massive Open Online Learning) leverage our inherent social needs by bringing people together to learn the same material in a virtual group. Students can express what they're feeling and experiencing with others in a shared space, making the learning journey more enjoyable and less daunting.

As people gain confidence, they often enjoy friendly competition with fellow learners to push themselves to compete exercises and assignments. Recognition is part of our need for building self-esteem—and some courses have gamification built in to reward student accomplishments and community helpfulness.

This is an interesting intro to social constructionism as it applies to eLearning.  I hope the MOOCs do what they suggest and are not just an attempt to throw jargon out there.

#HR The Intersection of Formal and Social | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it
In the old world, the separation between formal and social was clear: in formal spaces, like the office, formal rules applied. In social spaces, like our homes and cafes, social rules ruled. Today, that differentiation is gone: in the Social Age, we see a widespread convergence of formal and social spaces but, more importantly, a…

#Leadership Groups - Distributed Leadership in Social Learning

Leadership groups goes like this: everyone at a meeting belongs to a leadership group – and each group stewards one part of the learning process of the whole group. In this way leadership of the community meeting is distributed over the entire event.

Leadership here is seen as an act of service, that is, not leadership in terms of telling others what to do, but helping the group develop itself as a learning partnership.

#HR Social learning: A retail case study

#HR Social learning: A retail case study | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

Social learning is nothing new. In fact Albert Bandura developed one of the most relevant theories in 1925. This model talks about the ‘reciprocal determinism’, meaning the world and people’s behaviour affect each other.

It’s interesting in learning and development as we have seen a move to ‘talent developers’ and are also incorporating ‘culture and environment’ into our roles. This makes sense really, assuming you agree with Bandura’s Theory. Your world, culture and environment influences your behaviours and therefore learning.

When we learn together we foster high-quality connections. This means that we see the best in those we learn with, and they see the best in us. This mutuality is the foundation of a strong organizational culture – because we associate social learning with safety, feeling loved and feeling respected. When we learn together we feel more alive

We Learn More When We Learn Together

We Learn More When We Learn Together | #HR #RRHH Making love and making personal #branding #leadership | Scoop.it

We rarely grow alone. In fact, some psychologists have made a compelling case that we only grow in connection with others. However, we don’t need to learn with others in formal training or development programs: we can architect our own opportunities to gain insight, knowledge, and skills that move us on an upward trajectory. We can have more control over our learning at work if we make building high-quality connections a priority.

Via Kenneth Mikkelsen
Kenneth Mikkelsen's curator insight, January 13, 2016 11:51 AM

As employers’ training and development investments wane, we all have to take charge of our development. You can amplify opportunities for growth and learning by cultivating high-quality connections. Look for them inside and outside your team at work and beyond the boundaries of your organization, or even outside your professional life. The great thing about investing in building and maintaining these connections is that everyone wins.
