Based on Voltaire's 1759 novel, Candide has music by Leonard Bernstein with a book originally adapted by Hugh Wheeler, then adapted again by Robert Carsden and Ian Burton. The lyrics are by Richard Wilbur with additional lyrics by Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker and Bernstein. It premiered on Broadway in 1956 at the Martin Beck Theatre starring Barbara Cook.
Candide, the previously announcedChristmas musical at London's Menier Chocolate Factory, will star Fra Fee (Les Miserables), Scarlett Strallen (Mary Poppins), David Thaxton (Passion), Cassidy Janson (Tick Tick Boom) and Ben Lewis (Love Never Dies). Directed by Matthew White and choreographed by Adam Cooper, Candide will begin performances November 22 and will play a limited engagement through February 22, 2014. Opening night is scheduled for December 2.

The first revue Musical Theater Heritage staged at the Off Broadway Center was “Bernstein’s Broadway,” a survey of some of the remarkable music Leonard Bernstein composed for “West Side Story,” “On the Town,” “Candide” and “Wonderful Town.”

Why should we bother with Candide - the Leonard Bernstein operetta based on Voltaire's satirical-philosophical novella of 1759? The book - which ridicules the Leibnizian notion that “all is for the best in the best of all possible worlds” - has always struck me as more of a duty than a pleasure. And the musical - which suffered an arduous genesis and short-lived premiere in 1956 and has been much revised since - has long held the status of one of theatre's worthy causes.

Jackie Clune and James Dreyfus have joined the previously announced cast for Candide, which begins performances at Menier Chocolate Factory Nov. 23 prior to an official opening Dec. 2, for a run through Feb.
