The premature demise of a new original musical in the West End is never a great cause for celebration, even if you're one of those who believe that Andrew Lloyd Webber, so dominant for decades, deserves taking down a peg or two.

Last night the London Palladium, the world's most famous variety theatre, played host to a Grammy Award winner, a BAFTA Award winning Dame, BRIT and MOBO Award winners and Olympic champions at this year's Royal Variety Performance. The show was compered by comedian John Bishop with their Royal Highnesses The Prince of Wales and Duchess of Cornwall in attendance.

A sombre topic, such as suicide or the dreadful progress of a serial killer, is often just what a musical needs to get an audience humming the tunes. Highly successful shows such as Sweeney Todd, Spring Awakening and London Road all make this unlikely point, despite the common assumption that taking in a West End show should be a frothy, feelgood experience. So next week will see the arrival of a new award to encourage composers and lyricists to take greater risks with musical theatre.

The show commences previews at the West End's Aldwych Theatre on 19 December, and will feature Alexander Hanson (pictured centre), a veteran of Lloyd Webber productions, in the title role of society osteopath Ward, who unwittingly triggered the Profumo scandal of 1963 and was hounded to an early grave for his trouble.
