Which is why it’s been wearing on the patience of fans that the promotional materials for Into The Woods had included virtually no singing. The score’s a classic one, after all, and the hordes are dying to hear what it sounds like in the mouths of actors like Anna Kendrick, Chris Pine, Emily Blunt, James Corden, and the rest of the cast of the looming adaptation. Our wishes have finally been granted: The new featurette for the movie is our first real glimpse at the music.

Director Bob Fosse was anything but faithful when he adapted this Kander and Ebb tuner set in 1930s Berlin. Major characters were dropped along with most of the songs as the story zoomed in on the Kit Kat Kub, where American singer Sally Bowles (Liza Minnelli) lived a bohemian existence under the growing shadow of Nazism. A romantic and terrifying evocation of a unique moment in history, the film is elevated by the iconic performance of Joel Grey as the subversive Emcee singing "Money, Money" and "If You Could See Her." And that stirring anthem "Tomorrow Belongs to Me," sung by a wide-eyed member of the Hitler Youth? Absolutely chilling.

Many successful Broadway and West End stage productions originated as Hollywood musicals. Newsies, Saturday Night Fever, Mary Poppins, Singin' in the Rain, Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Victor/Victoria, and even that legendary roller-disco flop, Xanadu, started out as motion pictures and were profitably remounted and reimagined for the stage. Of late, Broadway has announced forthcoming productions based on the films An American in Paris, Gigi, andWilly Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, and there's no reason to believe there won't be more to come.
