The Infinitely Active Impurity.

The Infinitely Active Impurity. | Natural Products Chemistry Breaking News | Scoop.it

Everyone who's done drug discovery has encountered this situation: you get what looks like a hit in a screening assay, but when you re-check it with fresh material, it turns out to be inactive. Derek Lowe (blog "In the pipeline") discuss the subject. Paper in question is here http://pubs.acs.org/doi/abs/10.1021/ml200204m

Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Yields a Novel Lead for the Treatment of Malaria

Diversity-Oriented Synthesis Yields a Novel Lead for the Treatment of Malaria | Natural Products Chemistry Breaking News | Scoop.it

Discovery of a novel antimalarial agent using phenotypic screening of Plasmodium falciparum asexual blood-stage parasites. Screening a novel compound collection created using diversity-oriented synthesis (DOS) led to the initial hit. Structure–activity relationships guided the synthesis of compounds having improved potency and water solubility, yielding a subnanomolar inhibitor of parasite asexual blood-stage growth.

The human touch

The human touch | Natural Products Chemistry Breaking News | Scoop.it

As almost every scientist knows, a person's first year in research is an emotional minefield. One minute you're flying high. The next, you're banging your head against the wall, resisting the urge to draw in results with a marker pen. Forget the F-word; in science, it's the O-word that generates dread. I sometimes think that 'optimizing' should be spelled 'r.e.p.e.a.t.e.d.f.a.i.l.u.r.e.s'.

Small Molecules That Recapitulate the Early Steps of Urodele Amphibian Limb Regeneration and Confer Multipotency | Natural Products Chemistry Breaking News | Scoop.it

Kim et al. published about a small-molecule-based method to induce dedifferentiation in mammalian skeletal muscle. This is the first demonstration of a small molecule method that induces mammalian muscle to undergo dedifferentiation and rededifferentiation into alternate cell lineages. This method induces dedifferentiation in a simple, stepwise approach and has therapeutic potential to enhance tissue regeneration in mammals.

Unleash your inner dummy.

Unleash your inner dummy. | Natural Products Chemistry Breaking News | Scoop.it
There is something to be said for letting go of the mantle of expert, argues Peter Fiske.

Becoming a dummy frees you from dogma. Developing expertise can often mean ingesting unquestioned assumptions and accepted facts. Such received beliefs can lead to unchallenged group decision-making and prevent a community from recognizing a path-breaking discovery — especially when it comes from someone outside the discipline.
