Practically and privately, few people familiar with the SLS seriously contend it would be finished on time and on budget, much less compete with far less costly vehicles being built by Newspace companies. What makes it fly without ever leaving the ground is it carries one Very Important Political payload: the SLS will reliably deliver gobs of money to space shuttle contractors and a handful of related congressional districts for years and years after the last shuttle flies.
