As I write in my book, Designing and Delivering Effective Online Instruction: How to Engage Adult Learners, it is critically important to recognize and understand the principles of adult learning in order to provide the most optimal learning experience that will engage and motivate all learners. Research shows that in order to be successful in online classes, adult learners seek to be autonomous and self-directed.
