Nachbarschaftsakademie – 15th Garden english | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The Neighborhood Academy in Prinzessinnengarten presented in March 2016 the 15th Garden, a support network for independent food sovereignty in Syria, with an evening of discussion, food and music. The “15th Garden“ is a Syrian-European network that for the last two years has supported urban gardens and agricultural projects in and outside Syria. The network aims to strengthen independent food production in times of conflict; and above all, to sow the foundations for postwar food sovereignty.

Victor Lanselle's curator insight, March 19, 2016 10:02 AM
"They created gardens on rooftops, in backyards, between the ruins of bombed houses, built irrigation systems and organised seeds. These gardens play an important role for the local food supply and for local self-determination, under siege."

Project of the Day: Atadiat - Bringing Open Source Hardware to Syria | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it
Just few weeks ago, I’ve been informed for the first time about the existence of an Open Source Hardware Startup called Atadiat, operating in Syria. I stumbled upon the news since a friend shared a tweet mentioning the Shamduino board (an Arduino inspired board) and the fact that the board was basically made out of locally sourced materials. I basically reacted enthusiastically since – as you probably know if you’ve read some of the opeds here on the OPen Electronics blog – I’m strongly interested also in the impacts that open source hardware must and could have towards manufacturing and relocalization of productions also in terms of materials and supply chain in general.

Direct Democracy  :  Information Clearing House - ICH

October 24, 2014 "ICH" - "Asia Times" - The brave women of Kobani - where Syrian Kurds are desperately fighting ISIS/ISIL/Daesh - are about to be betrayed by the "international community". These women warriors, apart from Caliph Ibrahim's goons, are also fighting treacherous agendas by the US, Turkey and the administration of Iraqi Kurdistan. So what's the real deal in Kobani?

Sources And Methods: The Potential of Social Network Analysis in Intelligence | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The legality of the National Security Agency’s (NSA’s) use of US citizens’ metadata to identify and track foreign intelligence organizations and their operatives is currently a subject of much debate.  Less well understood (and consequently routinely misreported) are the capabilities and limitations of social network analysis, the methodology often used to evaluate this metadata.

Lessons of DIY Urbanism in a Syrian Refugee Camp | P2P Foundation | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Governments are so accustomed to dictating their will, through coercion if necessary, that they find it unimaginable that people might willingly – and with creativity and enthusiasm – self-organize themselves to take care of urgent needs.  So pause a moment to behold the remarkable Zaatari Refugee camp in Jordan.  This settlement of 85,000 displaced Syrians is showing how even desperate, resource-poor people can show enormous creativity and self-organization, and turn their “camp” into a “city.”

"This region – which consists of three geographically disconnected enclaves along the Turkish border – strategically used the deteriorating situation to declare self-rule in July 2012 and has since been celebrated as the “Rojava Revolution” within the Kurdish Movement associated around the Kurdistan Workers’ Party (PKK). The population of Rojava, which has long been a stronghold of the PKK, is predominantly made up of Kurds – both Muslim and Yezidi[1] – as well as Arabs, Christian Assyrians, Armenians, Turkmen and Chechens. The desire for some form of self-determination especially among the Kurds was triggered through decades of denial of basic citizenship rights under the Assad-regime.

Against the odds: Syria's flourishing mediascape - Aljazeera.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Since the Syrian uprising started in March 2011, grassroots media outlets have been flourishing within the country and among the diaspora. In a recent study commissioned by Danish NGO International Media Support, we have counted more than 93 online and broadcast radio stations, printed magazines and online publications, and web-based news agencies. And more are being launched, day by day, inside Syria, and at the initiative of Syrians living in Turkey, Lebanon, France, Germany, Jordan, Egypt, and the Netherlands.
