Hacking for humanity - BusinessWorld Online Edition

“LIFE,” Oscar Wilde famously said, “imitates Art far more than Art imitates Life.” In the case of the Sony Pictures’ movie The Interview, the world found itself confronted with a further iteration: life imitating art imitating life. The movie’s release sparked international intrigue, drama, and shadowy geopolitical power struggles. It even prompted a grave US presidential address -- all for a simple case of hacking.

Peter Ludlow, a philosophy professor at Northwestern University, wrote in The Nationthat the prosecution of hacktivists was part of "a war on knowledge" that extends beyond hackers to include Edward Snowden and Chelsea Manning, who exposed government secrets. Jailed Anonymous hacker Jeremy Hammond: 'My days of hacking are done' - The Guardian | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

Hammond was sentenced on Friday at federal court in Manhattan to the maximum 10 years in jail, plus three years supervised release. He had pleaded guilty to one count under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) flowing from his 2011 hack of Strategic Forecasting, Inc, known as Stratfor. In an interview with the Guardian in the Metropolitan Correction Center in New York, conducted on Thursday, he said he was resigned to a long prison term which he sees as a conscious attempt by the US authorities to put a chill on political hacking.

The Suicided Activist I: “Making Sense” of Aaron Swartz's Death - The Stanford Daily

The Suicided Activist I: “Making Sense” of Aaron Swartz's Death - The Stanford Daily | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

In January 2013, Aaron Swartz — hacktivist, inventor and prodigy — hanged himself in his Brooklyn apartment. He was 26. Since his death, the media has tended to interpret Swartz’s suicide as either a limited political critique or an ineffable personal problem. By some accounts, his death was a response to overzealous prosecution under the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act. Others read his suicide as the final chapter of his lifetime battle against mental and physical illness. Both these assessments are problematic for their tendency to remember Swartz for the way he died rather than the way he lived.

The Rise of the Ethical Hacktivist - LinuxInsider.com

The Rise of the Ethical Hacktivist - LinuxInsider.com | Peer2Politics | Scoop.it

The main problem with hacktivism "remains with the legislators and officials who fail to see things in analog-equivalent terms," said Piratpartiet's Rick Falkvinge. "If getting documents to a reporter was OK in the pre-Internet age as part of our checks and balances on power, then it has to be OK in the digital age, too." Yet "many powerholders freak out at the slightest occurrence of pentesting." - See more at: http://www.linuxinsider.com/story/The-Rise-of-the-Ethical-Hacktivist-80042.html#sthash.T8g7Zkki.dpuf

The group has instigated battles to find JusticeForSavannah in Arizona and JusticeForDaisy in Maryville, and now it’s even fighting a mysterious Utah boarding school named Logan River. Here’s your rundown of what exactly Anonymous has been working on lately:
