A lot was written about open-source architecture by Kaspori (2003), Fuller & Haque (2008), Sallingaros (2011), Ratti (2011) and Ratti and Claudel (2015), but very was actually done, because the framework doesn't exists and the open-source architecture ideas have been related to "Architecture without architects", DIY architecture and Alexander's (1977) ideas. But open source isn't about the amateurs - it's about the professionals, delivering faster, inexpensive and better products."

On the one hand we have a re-emergence of the cooperative movement and worked-owned enterprises, but they suffer from structural weaknesses. Cooperative entities work for their own members, are reluctant to accept new cooperators that would share existing profits and benefits, and are practicioners of the same proprietary knowledge and artificial scarcities as their capitalist counterparts. Even though they are internally democratic, they often participate in the same dynamics of capitalist competition which undermines their own cooperative values.

Open sourcing software leads therefore to competitive outcomes, and thus income, to vast reductions in infrastructural investments, which can be used in other productive ways by participating entrepreneurial entities. Finally, while the open source software is often free (as is a lot of proprietary software), it also generates substantial incomes for developers, which are actually a ‘aristocracy of labor’. Fair use pools not only generate 1/6th of U.S. GDP (according to a 2011 study) and employ 17 million workers, but developers are generally well paid for their work on software. Labor for open source is only ‘free’ if the motivation of the workers is to develop such software either for their own use, or to contribute to common projects they believe in.

Last year Open Knowledge joined the eSpace (Europeana Space) project to cooperate on the work for the Content Space, one of the spaces of possibility for the creative reuse of digital cultural content which this project is developing.
